They might well have AIS though. Virtual AIS has quite a range using shore stations to transmit the locations.
It'd also give you a chance to check where they are before you set off, which would help to minimise "interactions".

There also is an effective pinger already, firecrackers seem to be effective and don't appear to have harmed the Orcas.

Both are illegal and subject to heavy fines if caught.

Having been proved that there was a ban.
Then in the future it is possible for a relevant authority to impose a new ban but this time making sure that it works.
Thus keeping on about killing the Orcas is probably going to be counter productive.
For about five years there has not been a Cull and it is not very likely to happen in the future.

So is there any real and workable advice for those in the area?

Yet here was a ban that was imposed by the Spanish government. It was widely publicised and was even discused on here.

Orcas knock into sailboats, force Spain to limit yachting
Ok now that it has been shown that an area was closed.
This set me to thinking if at that time a yacht flying a UK flag knowingly entered that area and was damaged by the Orcas would the MAIB have the power to investigate?

Not to be controversial but I would bet a large sum that there were yachts transiting the area with the specific aim of entering or leaving A Coruna which would demonstrate how ineffective the exclusion zone was.

The MAIB want to know where the incident occurred so the ships captain would answer that question for them plus any rescue personnel.
It was more pondering about the MAIB authority to investigate any incident that caused damage to the vessels or endangered any persons on board?

I am not claiming anything about the way the law I'd written but if you broke the law yesterday then the relevant authorities could start proceedings tomorrow .

Just to be clear about the point that I am trying to make.
There are things being done and said that do no match the position of the relevant authorities. At the moment they are turning a blind eye to this.
To much noise or things being done that push those limits could easily cause those authorities to take action.
Those actions may not be to the liking of the people saying something must be done.
If you are pushing the rules is it wise to make a song and dance over what you are doing?
My feeling is it is not.

Don't count on not being fined in Portugal, they make things up as they go. We were threatened with €6k fine just for scuba diving in Ria Formosa without license from Capitania. Took us a while to persuade them to issue warning instead of fine. Even possession of fireworks is illegal and (hypothetically of course) if we had any on board, they would be well hidden.

Way ahead of you on this one !

Probably not very effective. Detonates on contact only, with a hard object, Range is fixed at about 250 yds, so even if you had a very big yacht with one of those, somehow obtained from a museum, and had some sophisticated sonar to go with it, they;d have to be a long way away from your rudder to engage them, and you'd probably have to hit one on the surface, for which a gun would be much simpler and easier

If attacked when submerged they'd probably just dodge it.

But perhaps you were being "funny"

You're discussing depth charges with a former submariner? Brave, but good luck.
