Someone really did their homework to come up with this.

Killer whale boat attack videos might not be what they seem

"I really feel that it is something about the underside of the sailboat, the keel, or the long portion of the boat that sticks far down into the water,"

It would be useful if we could come up with a single word that describes that bit of a boat? Something more snappy perhaps..well, more concise, perhaps not snappy.
Yeah, I read that and valued the "expertise" on the basis that they don't even know what part of the boat is being "interacted" with 🤔

Miami Seaquarium is returning Lolita the killer whale to her home waters

What effect could this have on the rest of the wild orca population, as far as teaching learned behaviours around interaction with humans. They've released a few over the years. "They throw you free fish if you are persistent!". Their behaviour is certainly more like attention seeking than aggressive.

Are the fish stocks depleted around the Iberian peninsular? Probably 90% of fish stocks are used up – fisheries subsidies must stop In this video he says the young was hanging back watching how it was done.

When I drive 100 miles and don't get a single fly splat on my windscreen I don't need a scientist to tell me something is very wrong in the world. Maybe more than into the land and air, microplastics, pesticides, every type of chemical crap is released into the water. eg Marine Biodiversity in Dangerous Decline, Finds New Report I wouldn't be surprised if its linked to that

if they are attacking because humans are taking too many fish.., why wouldn't they primarily attack fishing boats?

Is there any evidence that this particular population is under-fed?

I'm not suggesting they are attacking as a protest, they're probably not smart enough to put concepts together. I'm thinking they might be trying to get fed by nudging for attention. Fishing boats scoop up a huge amount of their food then drop a steady stream of dead fish if they are discarding due to quotas, a million tons a year Ban on discarding edible fish caught at sea has failed – Lords report and still happening at least with undersized fish and unpopular species if not directly due to quotes. Maybe the Orcas can't understand why the yachts aren't giving them part of their catch and are nudging to encourage it.

Fishing trawlers tend to have much bigger and more off-putting engines and propellers, are heavy steal boats so would hardly notice the sort of bumping and are obliging with fish so they might just swim a little behind waiting. Are fishing crew being questioned on orca activity? Surely an obvious thing to ask, but they might not notice it unless, like the Moroccan boat that was sunk, they have a flimsy wooden thing.

Searched and found fishing trawler orcas at DuckDuckGo

Also its not required for them to be underfed, they might have just learned to expect an easy meal. One popular fishing spot near me in Devon seals hang around and steal fish off your hook when you're trying to land them. There is even a cormorant that sometimes stands around behind you hoping you'll throw it a fish. Both are obviously capable of fishing for themselves, just lazy buggers!

Here’s the cormorant. He hasn’t started pecking at my heels yet but he does give the stink eye if I put the fish in the bucket. One day they might turn on us Hitchcock style.

Hide that report so the whales don't read it. :)

I’ve been up and down this coast a lot in the last few years and the fear of an orca attack is very real. My approach has been to hug the coast and not travel at night. Makes it a long trip. There aren’t that many places where a cat can get hauled to have damage repaired.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but has anyone looked at the percentage of attacked boats that have (1) black bottoms, (b) spade rudders, (c) fin keels, (d) GRP hulls

All the photos I've seen are of GRP yachts with fin keels and/or spade rudders and black-painted bottoms, so they might look like a whale to sea creatures.

Puerto Sherry, opposite Cadiz and Isla Verde in Algecieras. If anyone needs to.

I agree the best are El Rodeo Isla Verde in Algeciras - wide lift in a good sheltered dock, excellent technicians and Sopromar in Lagos who have a new specialist cat trailer capable of lifting huge beam. Superb technicians.

Slight drift but Isla Verde is in the tax free zone of the Port so no vat equivalent too!!

Article saying since March 23 three organisations, Portuguese Navy, National Association of Cruises (ANC) and Institute for conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), have been meeting and investigating Acoustic Devices to deter Orca Attacks. They will be conducting trials this summer.
