Ignore those RYA guidelines the advice is very poor. Use orcas.pt the group coordinates hundreds of boats a week through the danger areas, it tends to be people who are not in the group who get caught. The Orcas group is on telegram (Like Whatsapp) and there is a running stream of information of locations where orcas have been spotted. They also have access to some of the tags that some orcas are wearing.

The advice if you encounter orcas, is to head straight for shallow water at full speed. Orcas do not like shallow water and so your chances are much better if you head to the shore than if you stop dead in the water.

Last Friday, report on MOA forum that a Moody 31 was attacked 50 miles south of Cascais. Lisbon coastguard advised to go astern and attack then stopped. A few chips out of rudder and maybe bearing damage but tiller pilot mounting torn out of deck.
Is there a website with information about the mitigatory effect of pingers, please ?

so basically; "you can't do anything"
You can do what you like. Just be aware of the consequences should you be caught exercising some of the suggestions being whispered around. In most circumstances only the orcas will know what you did to defend your boat and crew. As of yet, no prosecutions taken place in either Spain or Portugal although a couple have been pending for a long while. There seems no appetite to pursue them by the authorities but one never knows. Following orca.pt suggestions doesnt break any law as im aware and continues to be the action of choice for most people.

most law recognizes a person's right to use deadly force to defend life - their own, or that of another.

are you trying to tell met that I can kill a person who threatens my life, but not an Orca that threatens my life?

I am waiting for a test case with an Orca.

Not trying to tell you anything. Just stating what is happening. If you want the official answer about harming orcas to protect your boat and crews then ask the authorities. I think most people on here already know the official stance though. As I said, there are 2 cases waiting but have been waiting for one and two years respectively with seemingly litle enthusiasm to pursue. I take it you're new to this discussion and the orca situation in spain and portugal as its all been said before many times here. Not looking for an argument, just trying say what the situation is in real life and trying to help. If you don't believe what I said then fine by me. You can always get your facts from the marine police in either country and put your first statement and question to them, see what they say.

The consensus of opinion seems to be that pingers are a waste of money, but they are widely and, apparently, successfully used in the fishing industry by all accounts. Has anyone actually had experience of their use 'under attack' and if so what's the experienced opinion please??

I doubt you'll find evidence of that on here. Too few people on here with first hand experience I think. From what I read, the pingers have been effective in some fish farm applications for scaring off seals, dolphins porpoise and orcas along with other fish predators. There is also a train of discussion that says the predators are now learning and see the pingers as a "call to food" i.e. a dinner bell. I live and sail in the affected areas and have seen boats lifted here with damaged rudders that said they were towing pingers. Lots of variables though, correct frequency, correct depth, how far behind the boat. But the general consensus here in Portugal is to save your money. While you're messing deploying/relying on the pinger, you could be taking actions that work more effectively. Follow orca.pt

I talked with the UK manufacturer… he told me many people only deployed pingers once the attack started or with the sighting of orcas. He recommended to deploy as soon as you leave the marina!! (You may have to day sail in the troubled waters because pingers need recharging). He also recommends 2 pingers - one each side. There is a new pingers on the market. German made. Met two people who have it but they did not realise they need deployment early!! The reason it works for fishermen is because they deploy early!!
