Have you checked that all old files of previous Open CPN versions have been deleted and that there are no old directories?
No I just unistalled the old non working version then installed the new one. What specific locations or folders should I be looking for and / or deleting to make sure the old version did not leave anything behind?

I'm not sure, I'm not familiar with Android but I have had some issues on my Linux Open CPN installation because there were some files duplicated and Open CPN crashed due to the conflict caused by the duplication.
That won't have been the reason for my first version crashing, because that was the first time OpenCPN had been installed on the phone.

I was wondering if you meant a possible cause for the 2 colour chart display issue.

Apologies for the late reply but I'm on Philippine time which is + 8 hours. I think a complete reinstall making sure all old files are deleted may help. Perhaps it's time to look at alternatives? I am unfamiliar with the android version of Open CPN but use a basic Nav app on my tablet which has raster charts from VMH. If you want to avoid Navionics, and annual subscriptions, you may find most of the apps are a bit clunky, I think the decent ones move over to an annual subscription model with charts included.

When you buy the paid version of OpenCPN it comes with access to their support forum - much more likely to get accurate, up to date info there from people who wrote it and actually use it than people who tried it and didn’t like it (it works fine with a touch screen interface now but I think shows that it was designed for desktop first rather than as a mobile interface). It also helps them get direct feedback on issues affecting real users.

I have been doing some digging around, and the 2 colour / 4 colour issue I think is related to versions of Open CPN.

The two that work, are a much older version on my Windows PC and a very early one on my old phone. These both show my CM93 charts correctly.

My Linux PC has a newer version of Open CPN and that shows the charts stuck in 2 colour mode, as does the current version on the new phone.

I have been over the settings with a fine tooth comb and can't find anything wrong. Thus I have concluded the more recent versions have issues with the old CM93 charts.

It is a shame, I like the way Open CPN works, so I just need to find some UK charts for it that I can buy, not rent. Still waiting for suggestions?

the o-charts seem to work fairly well. They are DRM protected so you can only install them on two devices (one of which can be a special dongle so you can move it between devices). £20 for the whole of the U.K. seems an OK price to me. Obviously you’ll need to pay again to get updates, but I believe it’s a perpetual license if you aren’t trying to move it or get updates etc.

I can vouch for o-charts working fine on Open CPN, I also have VMH raster charts on a dongle which also work flawlessly on my PC (Linux) I haven't the android version of Open CPN.

Updates for a year included in the price, then they are yours to keep on the same two devices in perpetuity. Even though they are supposedly limited to 2 devices if you change device and need another install license email them and they will send you one.

An old set of CM93 charts that work on my windows PC and my old phone.

I am tempted to try another set of charts just to rule that out, I might just seek out some free charts from another part of the world to see if they work? I don;t know of any free UK charts available at the moment?

I use old CM93 with Open CPN on a Tablet with Android 11 and on a PC running Ubuntu 20.04.1 .They both show 4 colour happily.
Thoughts :
Assume that you are clicking the Apply button when you change a setting ?
A file manager/explorer makes it easier / possible to find out where things are in storage -invaluable if you have an older version of Android
To try other charts you could download one of the dutch sets - see link on the Open CPN site e.g. Zealand
Try someone else's CM93 set.

Okay, I have downloaded some of the free NOAA US west coast charts, and they display properly in correct 4 colour mode.

So before I take the plunge and buy the o charts, can anyone who has these care to post a screen grab of a typical coastal area so I can see what they look like please

Here you are - the bay in front of my house. Bonus point to anyone who can identify where it is.

Finally a conclusion to this. O Charts paid for and installed and I finally have it working with an up to date set of charts that displays properly.

Conclusions: The old CM93 charts only display properly on old versions of Open CPN, but the old versions of Open CPN don't work on this more recent version of Android.

All this messing about has proved the logic of keeping the boating apps on a separate device to my normal phone. I don't want to be going through all the pain of getting the boating apps working properly should I need to change my phone for any reason.

Agree. I keep my o charts on a Raspberry Pi dongle and I try not to update any software until necessary. The Pi is only connected to a network when updating charts annually. That way I can put aside a day for all the prospective faff of:

Girlfriend 1.6 has been replaced by Wife 1.0
Installing Girlfriend 2.0 crashes Wife 1.0
Etc ?

Just another question.

With these O charts I see these extra green rectangles at the bottom of the screen. The number of rectangles and whether they are solid or outline depends on the zoom level. They never appeared before on any other charts, e.g. the free US charts I downloaded as a test.

They are mildly irritating, I would turn them off if I knew what they are called and where to turn them off.

On PC those green oblongs tell you that there are several charts showing the area installed, I'd guess the grey one is the one on display. Doesn't answer your question but may give you a place to look

Ah yes the number and which one is not solid also varies as you pan around without zooming. I would still like to turn it off if I could.
