Ooops, a dropped off the Sandbanks ferry, Poole.

I was anchored to the south of Brownsea Island and watched the barge come along and lift the car out. Port control issuing warnings all the time for boats to slow down and reduce wash as divers were down.
Never seen so many boats with blue flashing lights. All there seemed to work well together and got the job done in a reasonable time I felt.

My opinion
Basically some prat left their car on the slipway without putting the handbrake on, so the car went into the water blocking the ferry.
It's quite common, people forgetting hand brakes.

Couple of years back I was in a Tesco car park when a car started rolling out of a parking bay with no one in it.
I stopped it and SWMBO went inside Tesco and they tannoyed for the owner who came running out..

Had I not been there it would have rolled across the carpark running into one or more cars..

From the photo in the link it looks like a tractor or decent 4WD truck could have dragged the car back up the slipway. Might have been quicker.

Friends father was an instructor on Scammells. Going down Porlock hill, the trainee driver accidentally engaged the winch which somehow caused it to run away, after much frantic crashing of gears they went into the gravel trap, the gravel was half way up the windscreen.
Bro had a similar experience in the 50s in a Willys jeep driven by his garage employer, not much brakes.

So hands up them who have not just heard of it, but can actually do 'double declutching' on a crash gearbox....?
I could. I had to to get 1st while moving on my first few cars, or changing down when in a hurry. It's a bit more difficult on my current one, though. Search as I might, I can't find a clutch pedal. Does that make me a member of the incorrigibly lazy generation?
