One step back in boat buying

A decent competitive 1 metre model yacht will not leave much change from £3.5K. My friend bought one new for that when he hurt his knee & could not sail for a year. However he found our model yacht club so anal that he soon packed it in & sold it to me for £350-00. I am afraid that I found them no better & also gave up due to the attitude of the members. I sold it on for £350 to another friend & he has packed up after 3 months
It could be fun if the crowd we sailed with were more helpful & less argumentive. As a sailor I know the rules & after one collision I was having a migraine aura. I had to go back to the car park to get my pills & this prat followed me all the way to my car arguing about the protest, whilst I was trying not to fall over from dizzyness & blinding headache.

I now fly model planes at a club where the members could not be more fun. Unfortunately due to my leg & feet issue I cannot stand on the field for more than a couple of minutes, so have had to call a halt to that for a while as I might fall over whilst in control of a plane. Wansy would find it far more fun than model yachts
Try a shooting stick or even a fold up chair, it's what a disabled person would do.

I cannot balance on a stick whilst looking up ( I have done a practice on my one at home) & a fold up chair will sink in the ground. I cannot carry walking stick, chair, transmitter & plane to flying area out of the pits, all at the same time when prop is spinning at 11000 RPM. Also if plane lands in long grass just outside the landing strip, I cannot walk in the grass & I cannot walk far to get it
So it is not as simple as one might think

Eventually you would be out to grow the biggest onions?
I planted the onion I found sprouting in the fridge, in the dead of winter. Not much action for three months, but now...

I am sure there would be people to help you if you asked nicely.

Or, like a retired engineer of my acquaintance, build a model yacht destined to sail the Atlantic under its own navigation. It transmits its location periodically so you can see how far it gets. And retrieve it when it blows ashore just down the coast from the launch site!
There's a class of tiny (dinghy size) "model" keel boats with a seat inside which could provide some seat of the pants involvement but less committment of resources. (Though "full size" yachts can be free, they probably cost more to run.)

Was going to post a link but the idea is confusing my AI so I cant find one.

Dont THINK I made it up, but if I did, I'm obviously a visionary genius.

. . . Betweenyou and me I might be making a detour to view a yacht but it’s very wet hereabouts😏

Blowing half a gale and chucking it down is said to be the best weather for viewing a boat - you start to think practically. It's a salutary corrective to the sun-kissed calm blue seas and skies, bikini-clad lovelies draped over the foredeck, etc. shown in the ads & videos!

Perhaps more importantly, it might make the owner/broker, if in attendance, a bit less optimistic about their valuation of the vessel.

Yes, but you can't have a cup-of-tea-going-along, which is surely the whole point of yachting? :)

So wise. (y)

Always go to see a boat on a day when you wouldn't want to be sailing.

It'll have to be marvellous and a total bargain, or you'll be glad to walk away from what your inner mind knows the possible purchase truly is - sheer folly which will only occasionally bring you as much delight as dismay.

On the other hand, it's not that Wansy shows much evidence of a tendency to swoon and open his wallet at first sight of something that could have him skipping across the waves in the sunshine! :D

Surely some of the best things in life - perhaps the only things that make life worth living - only occasionally bring as much delight as dismay?

Friends, lovers, children, hobbies, creative endeavours, career . . .?

I was definitely thinking of how similar our instinctive approaches to boats and lovers may be, as I typed that. The parallel is remarkably close in lots of ways! 😄

And as with mistresses, old sailors don't tend to get wise to the absurd disadvantages, with age.

But there's a lot of satisfaction if we do develop some sense, and it doesn't need to be tempered with ineradicable consciousness of the downsides, and the small fortunes lost. :)

Would you buy a craft with a fuel tank only a contortionist can reach😂…..I set off from home in high hopes”this” will be the one but inevitably Realitygetsin the way 🙁

Yes
Because I would move the fuel tank.

If that is the only fault you can muster with “ the one” …..?
I’m sure you will think of something else 😂! Bless ya mate

Wansy: I set off from home in high hopes ”this” will be the one but inevitably Reality gets in the way 🙁

Don't be gloomy about reality "getting in the way", it only shows you haven't lost your wits.

To a lesser or greater extent, there's a romantic daftness in all of us. It needs a tight hold on the reins.

Even if a boat (or, ahem, any other distraction) might make us feel 25 for a while, the return to reality is likely to be a disagreeable bump.

There's a lot of joy to be had that doesn't need us to cut loose our good sense.
