One of my AD31s has boiled!

Are the caps OK.

On a car, I had a bad cap that did not hold pressure, boiled dry after a long "full chat" run up a long hill.

Knocked the tabs on the cap back with a hammer, then all OK, next day went and bought new cap. 60,000km later still no probs.

Sounds like it could be the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the turbo. There is a new type stainless steel gasket out now. Normaly the coolant sprays out from the underside of the turbo only when at full throttle, By the time you have slowed down to look it has dried up. I have had to lay along side of engines before whilst at full throttle to check this.

I would check this as I've had about ten engines (volvo AD31's to KAD44's) do this.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your help

Aquatom, from what you described It definitely sounds like this gasket could well be the problem.

I am hopefully going to take her out on sunday if the weather isn't too rubbish and will have a good look to see if I can spot it dripping out.

If it is this gasket, how much of a job is it to replace it for the new stainless volvo one? - its quite tight for access down there near the turbos..

Hi can you trell me where you got your trim tab motors from, are they sealine, my sealine 290 have the electric motors on the rams in the water and I think they are both gone, did you change them in the water and how much where they.

Hi

Eltrim Trim tab motors are from here... http://www.trickettmarineproducts.co.uk/trimtabs.html

£160 + VAT I think (receipts on the boat)

As for changing them in the water - no problem as long as you dont mind getting a bit cold.. there are only a couple of bolts. Also where the wire goes through the transom has to be above the waterline obviously..

Do change them though, it has made a world of difference to my boat now they both work!

Hi again

Just discovered that the gaskets between exhaust manifold and turbo on both engines are leaking which obviously solves that problem..

but... :(

There is also a pinprick hole in the stbd exhaust manifold (freshwater side) and when the pressure builds as the engine is run, it is also leaking coolant (this explains why the stbd side bilge has more coolant in it than the port side)

According to europarts a new manifold is over £1000! plus all the new gaskets etc!

Does anyone know can these be welded? or is it a new one everytime?

Hi, Are you sure its the manifold or could it be the gasket.

I had a similar pinprick leak from the gasket between the head and manifold on my engine (ad31p) 5 years ago. I replaced the gasket and took time to clean the manifold/head faces before putting back on. I changed the turbo gasket at the same time and all has been fine since. Some of the manifold studs were very tight and unscrewed from the head (not a bad thing).
Time to replace the gasket was approx 4 hours, also, best to have an assistance to give you tools and to make the tea.

Good to hear you found some leaks.

Turbo gaskets are not to bad to replace, but the oil feed and return pipes can be a bit tricky.

If the manifold really has a pin hole (quite rare) then I would not recomend welding unless you are sure it is not leaking inside aswell. You wouldn't want to stop the leak on the outside then find its filling the cylinders up instead.

Hope this helps.

P.S. When the turbo is removed run a file over the end of the exhaust manifold to make sure it is flat (some are not).

Surprised no Volvo Paul input here Must be having a punch-up in Yarmouth or your too far away to provide his services!

Nice one stelican!!! mrs volvopaul loved that one.

Seriously I didnt bother a reply as it was mostly covered before I got chance to read it as im away a couple of nights a week, however a new laptop with 3 mobile bb is excellent and the phone mast is in the yard at eastlands, so super speed via the dongle!!, anyway back to the post.

I too have done many leaky turbo gasket, also look for corrosion around the oval shaped water flow holes in the turbo and alloy ex manifold, I can get them remachined as opposed to a new manifold, get the system pressure tested might be agood area to start.

As for yarmouth and mr tony 345 ( I wonder if hes a broom 345 owner) not heard a peep from him since, I wonder if hes alerted his staff to look out for "steelaway" on the radio requesting a berth, to be told were full, even at this time of year.

I had a crack appear in my aqad 31 manifold took it off and had repaired at Hilsea Engineering in Portsmouth good people
2nd attempt cured it

Hi, thanks for all your replies.

I think what I am going to do is whip the manifold off and have a good look, see if its corroded and is more than just a pin sized hole.. Thats definitely the first step. I can certainly then get some advice/take it to someone to see if it is repairable.

I know there is a leak from the Exhaust manifold-turbo gaskets on both engines so I will change them myself or get the local marine engineer guy to change them for sure..

If I do indeed need to buy a new manifold as well as paying to change the gaskets, well Im afraid im going to have to pimp the missus out... its a hell of a price to pay but were talking about a boat here!..... its all about priorities!
