Can anyone tell me if a 1980 Johnson 30hp is the same engine as a 1987 Johnson 30hp. The graphics are different, as Johnson changed them every year back them, but underneath are they actually the same engine?

The reason for asking is that I have a 1987 one, and have been offered a 1980 one that I could use for spares and parts. But it will only be any good if it is basically the same. Thanks for your help

As suggested compare the part numbers for the two models. You will need the model numbers from the ID plate on the portside transom bracket

Crowley' parts site is useful for Johnson/Evinrude, Mercury and Yamaha

The official site is the BRP parts site at http://epc.brp.com/SiteMods/BRP_Public/BRP_Public_Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Index.aspx

Personally I find http://www.boats.net/ useful because it covers 8 of the most popular makes. They also have the facility to check what models any given part fits.

They all cover young ( ie 1968 and more recent) Johnnyrudes.
For older ones, back to 1955, the only on-line parts lists I know of are on Marineengine.com

Knowing how frequently OMC changed the details of seemingly alike engines I would expect some of the parts to be interchangeable but probably there are many that are not.

Have fun with the parts lists!

1980 is young for Johnson and Evinrude engines.

Parts are still readily available for engines much older than that. MarineEngine.com have the parts lists on line for engines back to 1955.

Plenty of even older engines seem to still be in use in the USA but of course most will have not seen salt water.

I gave a 1970s Johnson 2hp away because some bits were no longer available from Crowley. No big loss anyway. It was a noisy underpowered little thing

Thanks all for your suggestions. I'll get the serial number of the other one and go compare the part numbers.

Model numbers is what you want , not serial numbers

the 1987 one will start J30 followed a group of letters which define whether it has power tilt and trim (T), electric (E) or rope (R) start, shaft length( L=long), CU ( for 1987) and suffix letter B

I have found no indication of such an animal as a 1980 30 hp Johnson, 1984 being the earliest , other than some from 1956
However get the model number and it can be identified from that

Sorry I should have investigated further earlier
