I know! Bit of a puzzle, eh? Let's try to work it out...

Well 1 degree could be an astronomical thing - eg 1 degree before solstice or whatever. Solstice ain't for a while yet. I thought about Perihelion, but I've just looked it up and seems to be early January. Can't think of anything else... but JM does, I believe, have an interest in astro...

Or it could be a distance for someone/thing to go. Posted at around 1600, prediction of 0800Z tomorrow. 16 hours. At the Equator, 1 degree is 60 nm so over 16 hours that would be 3.75 knots. Or less at higher latitudes. That could be rowing speed in a favourable current? Is there a transat row in progress?

Some food for thought there, Black Sheep, and perhaps you've pointed me in the right direction...
Will the sun's declination move 1 degree further South before the midwinter solstice when it will begin to move North again?
I'll share the prize with you Mr Sheep!

Tomorrow morning he's teaching someone who'll reduce his Bacon number below the current 7
Sadly I'm not teaching anyone anything atm as I'm off sick. ACDF three weeks ago (Google will explain and Youtube has videos!) and I picked up and infection (second week on Antibiotics) and my voice hasn't returned yet. It's a whispering croak.

Wasn't that Windsor Davies and Don Estelle?

I recall you said something recently about being under the knife. Hoping for a speedy recovery so you can resume your moderation reign of terror !

Meanwhile... put us out of our misery. I'm now assuming you're talking about the Three Degrees, and the answer to "When Will I See You Again" is 0800 UTC tomorrow

Soon after 0800Z tomorrow by my calculations.

Not so many of us left who'd know what '0800Z' meant....

....Or 'One Degree to go'.

Might that be Long or Lat or Celsius? Or....?

Might it be the rare alignment of two planets to give the appearance of 'The Christmas Star'........?

?

I'd rather hoped that people would take a little longer to decipher my slightly cryptic post!
I tried to throw you off by mentioning calculation but I agree that there is very little calculation required (a little addition etc from entering 'd' from the tables.)

On Saturday at a few minutes past 0800Z the Sun will have one degree to go before the it reaches it's max declination S on the 21 December at the Winter Solstice.

The answer to the question as to how you calculate Dec of the Sun is that there is a simple crude way that doesn't take into account the elliptic nature of the earths orbit etc and a more complex one that the Almanac might be using to generate it's tables. I good precis is here: Declination Angle | PVEducation.

I cheated and looked it up in the Nautical Almanac that I'd fetched and was by my bedside. Why am I that sad man with a Nautical Almanac by his bedside? When Escoffier's boat sank, I immediately fetched for the Almanac to look at times of Sunset and Sunrise for his last known Lat and Long to see what was happening down there in that area. (I then ended up having to explain local time vs UT to Mrs M.... My own fault and I should have kept my mouth shut.). I was then looking at the dec of the Sun and thinking about how long it would be until the days started lengthening and how much shorter they're going to get - and the answer is not a lot as there was barely a degree to go. A quick tab through the tables and a bit of mental arithmetic and you can find the time when there's one degree to go.

Mrs. S is good at Astro and often has to explain local time, UT and conversion of arc to time to beginners. Our household conversations are perhaps 'different' .........?

Yesterday's topic was use of selected stars to choose the best twinkles for a four point fix. We also talk about Strictly Come Dancing and whose gonna cook tea.
