On the theme of \"I just found\" below.....
Did anyone find the "SURVEY! SURVEY! SURVEY!
Living on board in your twenties: Paul Jeffes helps a young couple pick a liveaboard boat for £35,000.
" as pointless as I did. Well apart from the nostalgic brief mention of two old timers, there wasn't much substance in it.
Paul Jeffes, who I respect as a well time-served seaman who must be well qualified as a surveyor as well as one to give a recommendation on a suitable boat for many a set of given circumstances was pushed to put his name to a drab exercise this month (Nov. 04)
One boat was already sold and the other might have been by the time he got to look at it. (This wasn't clear) The true requirements of the couple weren't made clear except that they wanted a liveaboard in the Med. Well that could be fulfilled by a very large number of boats. Flicking through the For Sale small ads in that edition showed several likely contenders. Several of the Moodys or Westerleys, a Nab, a Seadog, or a Rival would fit the bill well.
As others said (or WTE) in the original thread, a lot of articles these days are just there to fill in the bits between the advertisements.
The research seemed poor with little trouble taken over it, the pictures uninspiring and badly cropped. All together either a "couldn't be bothered" article or something that fell apart when no suitable boats were available and which therefore should have been pulled IMO.
In contrast (although not exactly comparing like with like I acknowledge) the article on Bill Nutt's Contest 38 the previous month was detailed, informative, well laid out and entertaining.
YM, if yo're going to do valid and useful boat searches in a genuine attempt to assist people in selecting an appropriate boat, with your skill, knowledge of the boating spectrum AND the resources at your command, you should be able to do better that this.
