On board the Edith Maersk

I assuming that the engine is a reciprocating diesel powered engine. If so the injectors were massive, bigger than a man and the diameter of the fuel lines looked about 6"-9". I think the chain wasn't calibrated as it kept jumping in the gypsy (-;

Burmuister & Wain or B&W Slow speed diesel I didn't cound the Units.

The silver six inch line to the top of the Exhaust Valve is a hydralic version of a pushrod.
The fuel lines and injector are pretty big but not quite taht big.

What worries me is that it is a chinese owned vessel
We ought to stop oglling at it & work out how to counter it!!
Remember that is your job going up the wall!!

Are you sure? According to wikki, Maersk is Danish.

On their website news there are also details of damage to Emma Maersk in Saudi. Stern thruster prop break up, caused flooding.

Of course she is!! Total brain failure by me
I will delete the post

Spot on tho for where most of the goods are shipped from!! There is a big Maersk hub in nearby Algeceiras. Its amazing how they run their shipping to a timetable, just as soon as one leaves, the next is rounding Europa Point. Exudes good seamanship too.

How does a chain that big get delivered and installed? Is is established link by link on the spot?

Not certain what size as I cannot get pictures, ships chain is normally measured in shackles 27.432m linked with kenter links...

Although when long lengths are needed offshore, it is often transported in bundles that have lifting wires through. so a crane lifts the chain off the truck by bundles, with it connected to the next bundle, then the next bundle, then the next bundle...

Then put in Chain Lockers on the specialist ships/ rigs for use at sea...

Could be irresponsible seamanship in some circumstances:

As a cadet or third officer, I can remember steaming up the Channel at full speed in a container ship in thick fog - didn't feel right to me, but there was no way I could countermand the Skipper, and the word was that he would be demoted if the ship missed its timetable without very good reason, (and fog didn't seem to be one of them!).
