As I am heading for the winter mud berth today, init 'laying up' and not 'laying down'. Or were there some peculiar practices best not revealed in public taking place at the Green Man - not that that would be peculiar there, nor particularly public. Don't you 'lay down' fine wine and lay up yachts; (that's not laying down IN fine wine). Tables are 'laid out', provision are 'laid in', plans are 'laid for'. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You see, all it is not as it appearsd, and yet plainly the point is there to be grasped.
The whole essence of this place is in its innate ability not to be a Yacht Club.
It is a seasonal fact that Yacht Clubs have Laying Up Suppers. Mostly these have very little to do with a concerted effort or event to remove ones craft from service. Its usually some arbitrary date set in a calendar of social events predicated on a traditional sailing year, and fitted to avoid other clashing, yet no less profitable socials. Note that these events are still largely attended by people who either have no boat, used to have a boat but still like belonging, or those who venture no further than the river mouth. Few indeed are those who have earned their Laying Up, and, by odd happenstance, they are he ones whose boats are not and probably will not be Laid Up.
The YBW event cocks a snook at tradition, and its attendees almost all arrive by water. Ergo, they cannot be considered Laying Up, as they clearly are not. The second point being here is that most of those in attendance would not belong to any Club that would consider them as a Member, although they are fine pillar of the Sailing Community nonetheless.
The impression you may gain therefore, is of a collection of like minded people who gather to blow a collective raspberry at these niceties
It has also been notices, in more than passing that these same folk have a predilection toward emptying gallons of alcohol, of varying hues and strengths, into themselves in the cause of bonhomie.
Add to this a heavy dinner and a little conversation, and the net result is the desire, or, in extreme cases, the need, to Lay Down.
Whilst I grant you the Laying Down is usually at a very late hour, after the grape and hop have down their work, we consider it appropriate to label the event a Laying Down Supper. Not that many can remember in the morning, and the Note of Record is the very place you are reading this from now.

There, I do hope that clarifies things for you, and we look forward to welcoming more and more people. I can say wiothout exception, all of the Forumites I have met have been well worth meeting, and I for one am happy to continue pouring strong drink into me for the purpose of socialising with these fine folk.

perhaps we shoud have forum Wiki, for those whose thirst for knowledge needs slaking?

It also depends on the professions of the club members.
Undertakers should have a Laying Out Supper.
Policemen really ought to have a Fitting Up supper.

Do Faith Healers have 'laying-on' suppers?
Do carpet fitters have 'underlay' suppers?

Who started this?

Motor Mechanics having 'laying under suppers'
EU Commissioners have 'laying it on thick' suppers

Sunbathers have 'ham salad suppers' (as in 'laid out like a ham salad')

I'm sad really - no, not like that, TG is in her winter berth which is probably as well given the forest on her bottom - 18/19 knots of wind today and at best little over five and half knots, stacks of weather helm etc. I think I had one too many scrubs out of that erodable anti-foul.

Old gaffers have "Be-laying up suppers"

I can see lots of boats where live and it's a sorry sight to see the numbers thinning. Those that are in at Leigh live in fear of the damage 4000 Brent geese might do! Lots more than usual this year - a sure sign of something.

TG was built at Leigh on Sea - apprapos of nothing.

What about starlings. Last night as I was leaving TG, the boats next door were covered in the blighters. I escaped though and am now safe with mast down and cover over. But one year it was in the mudberth for a week with the mast up and the guano stank to high heaven.

. . . does this mean there will be another laying down supper at the start of the season too ? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Recognising that I do not wish to establish a Monopoly on Formal Event organisation, and that your suggestion of a season starter is yours alone, I commend to the House that Mr CP Dream be appointed Managing Defective of the 2008 Kick Off Jolly.
I think thats called being Fitted Up. See comment above.

Over to you Al.
PS, The George and Dragon meal went very well, even if the quality of boat and standard of Skippering left a bit to be desired.
