Does anybody know the difference between the Tomahawk and the Thunderhawk? Both were made in the late 80s and up to about the mid 90s. Has anybody owned either of these models, any info would be useful?

Have a good Christmas everyone.

37 Tomahawk
37 Tomahawk Series II, with the wings and different stern
43 Thunderhawk
41 Tomahawk

I think the Thunderhawk was prod till 1992
the layout of the boat is the same with more space on the 43,
43 was availabale with triple petrol angine option

Hi,

My Dad owned a Thunderhawk a few years back. At the time he looked at several 43s, 37s and 41s.
The boat was to be based in the South of France, the cockpit layout of the 43 ( wrap around seating) suited the climate better than the bench seating on the 37. Although the 37 and 43 appear to have similar interior layouts, the 43 is noticably more roomy and this largely swayed the decision.
The boat in question was a 1991 example, with twin 502 merc's - would give 42 knots (open exhausts were a huge bonus!)
Overall i'd say they are both great boats. I've been caught out in the 43 in Mistral winds and 3m + seas and it always felt solid and safe (more so than the current superhawk range imho).

Hope that helps!

One of our technical writers, Greg Copp, has just bought a Thunderhawk 43 running on LPG but also looked at Tomahawks before buying. He is writing about his new Thunderhawk in the next issue of MBY on sale Jan 3.

It is possible to fit 3 x 480 Bulldogs into a 48 which is roughly the same beam as the 43, maybe it is possible?. Over 1400hp on a 9 tonne boat, it should be good for 65 knots?.

I spent about a year looking at Tomahawk 37s from 1989 to 1993 model years. Got any questions please shout, or if you are looking at a specific boat let me know...I might have had it surveyed! For my money you have to go for the Mk2 variant. Mk1 has a crappy dash, and the electrics are not as good as the Mk2...few other bits, all cosmetic.

Careful, some of the changeover year boats have some bits from a Mk1 and some Mk2 bits. One I saw in France was all Mk2 apart from the electrics.

You can only get 2 engines in the 37s but Tomahawks were also in a 41 feet model that was available with 3 engines.

I believe the 3 engine versions were prone to overheating (the middle engine starved of air and too hot). Quick, though...50kt+.

I have no experience of Thunderhawks, however, sorry.

I eventually bought a very cheap Superhawk 34.

PM me for other details....
