The gooseneck finally gave up & fragmented at the weekend. I have a Proctor mast with the old style boom roller reefing that was fitted to many older Westerlys. The sail shape was horrible so I convereted to slab a few years ago but I kept the boom. The gooseneck is atatched to a spindle that runs through the mast & there's a handle at the front. If you know what I'm refering to, please read on.

The question is how to get the thing apart. It seems that the handle & shaft are a one piece casting which means the gooseneck must come off to extract the shaft. All I can see is a couple of roll pins at the gooseneck end. It may be that these are all that hold the goseneck on with something more substantial hidden away for mechanical strength. However, it looks as though the roll pins can't be easily removed. If I try to push them out towards the mast, they will get caught on the mast. And, I can't get access at the back to push them out away from the mast - in fact I'm not even sure there's a hole at the back to push them through.

I guess I can post some pics, but unless anyone's actually taken one of these apart, I'm not sure they will help. I'm reluctant to hacksaw the handle off & remove the shaft from the back as suggested by a local "expert" in Westerly rigging. If I can get the thing apart, I may be able to get a new part fabricated which may be cheaper than a whole new bracket.

So anyone have any experience in taking these apart? BTW, I'm am trying the Westerly Owners Forum too.

As I expect you know, Selden took over Proctor, but in my experience very good luck getting any sensible or helpful answer and their stock of Proctor stuff is small.

Sailspar are the complete opposite and one of the most helpful firms I've ever been in contact with, may be worth asking even though it's technically not their kit; they have a lot of mast steps and bits and pieces for various extrusions too.

Failing all this inc the other contacts you're trying, as you wisely don't use the roller reefing I'd make very sure of a replacent ' boom side of the mast ' gooseneck then take a saw to the old one.

I know the through mast roller reefing system you are referring to, but not intimately.

Looked at the front of the mast? Vague recollections of there being a couple of screws there ?????

I can't help with dismantling instructions but, I have just got a new Z spars mast and kept the original boom.

Which bit of the gooseneck is broken? If it's the bit on the mast you should be able to get a fitting like my new mast fitting, if it's the end of the boom that's bust this isn't much help.

Boom held to goose neck by a single roll pin. Should tap out with a pin punch.
If sheared then the boom should levet out off the goose neck .

But doesn't the OP want to know how to remove the gooseneck fitting from the mast?
