Old Ropes

a. The do not recycle them into rope (recycled ropes are made from PET bottles). The rope fiber is too degraded by UV to be used in any high to medium value product. They make insulation and non-woven cheap stuff.
b. I'm betting their main motivation is to prevent re-use, so that we buy more.

Reuse is ALWAYS the best first recycling use.
  • Good sections of cover (halyards inside the mast) are great for covering Amsteel tails.
  • " " " strops and sail ties.
  • Your halyard might make a perfect jib sheet for a smaller boat.
  • Mats
  • Yard work
  • Construction and tree work guys.
  • etc.
By the time it is re-used enough... it's probably just trash.

Old ropes can make excellent fenders just look for macrame designs. or Fold a rope in half and do a reef knot in the tails just below the mid point loop. Now add another reef knot followed by more reef knots until you run out of rope. Hang it by the middle loop. ol'will
