My father was at sea during the 1890s at the time of the Australian gold rush and passed his exam as mate age 19?
He was taken on as mate on a square rigged ship despite the masters reluctance due to mass desertions
When he arrived on board he was greeted with the statement that if he needed any advice from the master to come with his bag packed as he would be going straight to the forecastle
This stalemate existing till they arrived about 200miles south of Ireland approx 3 months later and as he ordered sail reduced for night sailing as usual the captain came up and commanded all sail lowered
