Your opinions please?

The old man has a Hobbie 16 which has been sat in a barn for about 6-7 years. He doesn't think it ha a value as is and wants to do it up, but I think otherwise as I'm sure somebody will probably just use it as a fun hack boat.

It is complete with a road trailer and box. Other than being sat in a pigeon infested barn for 6 odd years its only two down sides is it had a hole (about fist sized) punched in one float about 15 years ago which has subsequently been repaired, but not painted, and the last time it was sailed, some 10 years ago the lines were rotten ish then! (Both have great stories behind them!)

What do people think? Flog it as is or spend some money doing it up and flogging it?

Cheers for your thoughts

Cost out the repairs and (if important) the time involved.
Like high-end vehicles, the refurbishment using new parts may be uneconomical.
If you can do it for under £100 or so it could be worth it (remember wheel bearings, cracked tyres, etc) A good one could be worth a bit, but will it ever be good enough?
Otherwise just stick it on ebay with a realistic reserve or as a classified ad. (actually Boats and Outboards is better for ads). Clean it, rig it, and take a piccy for the ad.

The first cat I had was a 16, great fun boats especially in big wind. Since the I've had a Hobie 18 (heavy but bombproof), a Hurricane 5.9 (very fast, tough, great boat) and now race a Hobie Tiger F18 (best so far).

The only thing with selling an old 16 is that there are a lot of them about which can effect value. Hulls are very tough and easily repaired and tarted up (if possible polish the gel do not paint it as you'll devalue it). Condition of sails is a big selling point as Hobie charge a rediculous amount for these. Check condition of rudders, make sure cams all work and there is no slop in the casing/blade.....spacers made from milk cartons work well.

A few questions

1 How old is it?

2 What condition are the sails?

3. Any pictures?

4 What is the asking price?
