A Stephen Jones design from the late 70's or early 80's . Had a bulbous bow. Does not his first Hustled 32's meet half ton ratings when properly trimmed etc? I think that Xaviera did ( sorry cannot recall spelling) They were fairly big boats. His 36's were 3/4 ton or thereabouts.[/QUOTE said:
Hustler SJ32 rated 1/2 ton with masthead rig, 3/4 with tall fractional. One is still doing well round here. Also the later SJ30. Other old 1/2 tonners that did well are MG 29, Contessa 33 (Humphries) David Thomas Hydro & Toledo (well built, so should still be around). Finally what about Laser 27 (Bruce Farr)? In their day, they were very difficult to beat under their CHS/IRC rating, which was close to 1/2 Ton.

A half tonner ( Ocean Beetle) designed for Tyler boats production (but this one was not actually built by them) won the Round Britain a year after launch. Is she still around? Not sure if Tylers actually did build any - only had the moulds made.

sailed em for 15 years at the top end and its a wealthy mans game I can tell you without fear of contradiction. If you are just doing round the cans and arent that interested in winning events then you will pick up a pre 80's half tonner for next to nothing from the days when they were cruiser racers rather than out and out racers. One of the boats we had was completely carbon fibre and dated from the early 80s to a Jean Berret design. The original bill of sale was with teh boat papers. You could have bought a four bedroom house fro the price! Very early half tonners do make good small cruisers especially She 31/ Shamrock 30/ UFO 31 or Eliminator 31 all dirt cheap to buy but thats when the spending starts even on those boats!!!

5 Half tonners out for the Lambay Race in HYC on Saturday - Checkmate XV, Checkmate XVIII, The Big Picture, Harmony and Mata (ex-Trastada).

Checkmate XV won class 2 by 3mins from a very well sailed x332. We were 7th on Harmony which wasn't great

Ocean Beetle was moored at Tighnabruaich for a few years. Maybe a decade ago.
