Dad just given me a load of post war charts of W Scotland, (B/W, fathoms etc) and I thought of papering a wall in a room or two with them. Anyone done this? Seems a silly question, but I can't think of any problems....

Various ways ..... paper it like stiff wallpaper

or

varnish the charts and then tack them in place.

I envy you as I would like to do same .....

This is a very bad idea as although the charts will be nice and flat, they wil be difficult to use, requiring that you go back home instead of check the chart in the saloon, which surely a bit easier? if you wallpapered the saloon, that would be handier, but make sure the important bits aren't behind a door, for example.

Seriuously you will need quick thickish wallpaper paste, and to experiment with butting up two pieces first - to find shrinkage.

I got an old B/W chart framed in a gallery in Glasgow and they had quite a few enquiries if it was for sale, when it was finished. You maybe sitting on a nice little earner if they are in good nick, harbour bars, yacht clubs etc.

Hi!

My wife and I saw charts used as wallpaper in the Nauticalia store in Brighton, we liked it so much that we did the same on two walls in our appartment.

We ripped the charts in large chunks and then pasted them to the wall with regular wallpaper paste. We did first seal the wall with some kind of wall sealant. It was a lot of work to attach the bits of chart to the walls, but we are extremely happy with the result and still enjoy it every day!

We also once saw charts used as wallpaper in a restaurant, but in this case, the charts were all in one part and stuck to the wall as big rectangles. We did not like the way this looked.

Goodluck!

I like the sound of this.
You say you tore the charts up into chunks, do you mean little square pieces and how did you stick them back, all out of sequence, butting up, overlapping?
looking like a jigsaw puzzle?

I might just have enough old charts to do a wall in the khazi

Very Bad idea

You say the charts are of Scotland - well it rains quite a lot in Scotland which means you'll get damp walls.

And On her back there was tatooed a Map of Ireland
And when she took her bath on Saturday
She loved to rub the sunlight round Kilkenny
Just to watch the suds go down by Galway Bay

Re: The khazi

I think it is fairly important to check the arangement of various bit from the seated position. You would not want some "foul ground" for example right in front of your nose. Perhaps a bit of west country, altho i have always felt falmouth is a misunstood name. A large-scale chart of Salcome might be appropriate. Also take cae not to have great swathes of brownisgh-coloure land low down near the skirting board, might look a bit odd.

To prevent them going yellow and getting water marks as can happen with varnish .Try PVA glue, coat both sides with the PVA and let them dry then use wallpaper adhesive in the conventional way.Gives them a vinyl finnish which you can also wipe clean.
