Observer, you usually carefully reason your arguments and that is respected. However I believe these ones to be misguided.

I hope you don't mind me cutting and pasting here but time dictates.

So on balance (I infer from "probably") you agree it was a good thing. Tough call huh? Good job you didn't have to make it.

Answer: Jimi didn't say it was a good thing. A large proprtion of populous did not want us to go to war. Having been presented with a fait accompli, a mitigating opinion has it that Saddam is better gone. Other serious problems are now faced in Iraq. It may have been a tough call but an inordinate amount of people (not just public opinion) believe it was the wrong one.

So "democracy" requires a single issue referendum on everything? I can't remember the exact quote but consider: "the greatest betrayal of the people is for their elected representatives to be slaves to public opinion"

Answer: Democracy certainly doesn't need a single issue referendum on everything. Elected leaders should govern as required. But only on the basis of truth.

The UN was in a mess anyway. What relevance a mutual security organisation whose MANDATORY resolutions had been repeatedly defied for 12 years.

Answer: Agreed - but that needs sorting out, which will now be more difficult.

Unsubstantiated opinion. Security didn't look too good anyway

Answer: We now have another place in the world where regular bombings are costing lives. How long will that go on?

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unsubstantiated. Let's wait for Hutton's report

Answer: We have heard for ourselves much of the evidence alteady.

Answer: Ditto above

What personal motivation, exactly. Personal conviction reagrdless of a weight of public opinion against him? Wish we had more politicians of conviction.

Answer: It is widely known that a quickly won war against an adversary which is a possible threat to a way of life, can be become a popular cause. That could be a personal motivation? Yes, we need politicians of conviction but also of prudence.

I'll post an answer to your points later but just want to place on record that my somewhat immoderate comments on Jimi's response to my post was for the sake of argument and not meant as an attack on him. I made an unannounced appearance at a forum bash last night and thought to stir the pot a bit before arriving.

Jimi, you're a good bloke. Hope you managed to wake up at the right station.

I was under the impression that "previous" was admissible when guilt had been determined in order to administer an appropriate tariff.

Woke up when the train stopped and got off, does'nt Salisbury look different in the dark! And I did'nt know that the National Maritime Museum was there ... ayway I've had a kip on a park bench and am now off to do a bit of begging to get the money for a cup of tea and a train home .. do you think I should ask for 2p or is that just being grredy?

Hi you might remember me.. I invaded a few centuries ago.. as far as I can see this Bush/Blair invasion looks pretty ineffective by my standards.. I would say you have little to fear

Re: 7 minutes!

Of course we can do it in only 7 minutes. All we do is just cur down the lenght of the fuse and use 2 swan vesta's to light the thing!
