Its safe to go back in the water just now - flying the desk again for a few days.
Brilliant Summer Cruise - boat in Largs this week as the nephew is living on it whilst he sails in the Laser Nationals.
The Dilemma. Going back on Friday to return the boat to Loch Melfort - or should I get it back to Fleetwood so that I can do all those niggly little jobs I've identified over the coming winter - or should I take it back to Melfort and travel up there for working weekends and save myself from the tedium of the Irish Sea?
I have no idea what to do and see merit in both strategies - so its up to you.

Re: niggly little jobs

Do the niggly little jobs that you have identified relate to the boat? Or are they at work - perhaps the desk is a bit wobbly, for example? OR - do these tasks comprise just that - some "niggling" to be carried out over the forthcoming winter, perhaps pointing out the errors in the way other people have decorated their Christmas trees, that their mistletoe is in the wrong place, or they have rather messily tried to clear the snow?

Either way, having the boat near to where you live will give you more time for doing jobs on the boat, or on the desk, or the straightforward winter niggling that of course, somebody will have to do.

Re: niggly little jobs

Well - where to start.
The niggly little jobs were mostly to do with stripping off some bits of varnish and replacing the cooker and repiping the gas supply and possibly round 3 with the eberspacher.
My desk is new so is free of wobbles at the moment - but what amazes me about you Matts my old flypaper is your perception. How did you know that I am the self styled mistletoe and pavement clearing inspector - acting unpaid of course with a view to the benefit of the wider community?
Amazed.

I assumed that the pavement inspection duties etc were all part of your role as advisor to women who have fallen over, as in your bio?

Re: niggly little jobs

Hmm
I like to consider myself more of a councillor than advisor - seems to lend a more ethereal tone, don't you think.
The summer cruise involved a stopover at Port Ellen on Islay where there is a house of liquid refreshment named the White Hart.
It was a hot evening and excesses of clothing added to personal discomfort and so the young women of the locality were to be seen combatting dehydration through the consumption of copious quantities of strange coloured liquids and the wearing of not a lot.
I came out thinking there is much work for me to do up there - Dear Heart was less than impressed by my attempts to save one particular young thing from herself - breakfast was a quiet affair as I remember.

Welcome back.

Be a bit of a bugger if you went back to L Melfort started a job and realised you had left an important bit of kit at home.

But on the other hand, you could have nice winter weekends up north.

Does that help?

Bit windy in Largs today.....

Cheers Donald - How went it? I sailed through the Kyles on Friday and was looking for your boat but didn't spot it. Did you make Barra?
We had some foggy stuff last week off Jura and Islay which was interesting spent a day in the Ardmore Islands which are beautiful - but the Mull was an absolute millpond. Called into Sanda for a few hours - he's worked hard on that, seems a bit fed up with 'authority' just now - hasn't agreed the loss value on his boat and the thunderstorms seem to have taken his power generators out. He also said the Police had buzzed him in the helicopter - checking on opening and closing times he reckoned - seems a bit daft! (and expensive)
My theory is that I can get 2 fairly long days maintenance in if I make a weekend of it - I used to quite like calling in at the boat on my way to work or homewards but I seem to get railroaded into domesticity if I'm at home at weekends and the boat has to come second to Claymore Towers.
I do hate the Irish sea though!

Dilemma

Tale of two halves for our summer cruise.
First week and a half was fantastic. Went up from Tobermory via Arisaig, Oransay, Plockton, Portree to Rona. Weather was fantastic with southerlies all the way up.

Sheena got infection in her eye (she has glaucoma) in Rona which necessitated a jump from Rona to Arisaig for a doctor. Got one in Mallaig. Things with the eye got progressively worse so shipped her off on the last train to Glasgow to be picked up at the other end by her brother. Cut a long story short, she was in hospital for 11 days, and the sight in her eye has just started to come back. But not great.

I took Rebel back from Arisaig to Kames, which though a bit exciting going round Ardnamurchan was for the rest of the time very boring.

Managed to get out sailing with Sheena and girls last weekend to Tarbert. Looks like its going to be a long time before Sheena feels confident with the amount of sight she has left - but she's desparate to be out on the boat.

I'm going to post elsewhere about getting prescription goggles or similar.

Rebel should have been there on friday!

Regards

Donald

Plans already in progress for next year, though...

Re: niggly little jobs

Yes i got a bit concerned by that. Could it be that Claysie is a FCP ? Why does'nt he help pensioners who have fallen. I know if I were walking along and came acrosss an elderly gentleman prone on the tarmac I'd try to help him up, unless of course he was stinking of drink, covered in vomit and crawling with lice. In that situation I'd probably just carry on and get my train. Claysie, we need a fuller explanation of the scope of your fallen people erection!

mmm well this may help you decide.. I am contemplating Loch Melfort as a wintering location for a certain boat that is hopefully to be mine ....

My dilema is the same ..in that I could keep it relatively locally at Caley Marina (in Inverness) but I don't really want the boat on the E coast but Loch Melfort is exactly around the corner.....

P.S. I get my Cauli's delivered from Findhorn .. the famous enormous (and tasty) vegetable growing place..

HI
Why not get Giles and Alicks to sail her down, and we could have a few pints in Glasson yacht club. Paget's Lady has just had her bottom planed at Aunty Barbara's today so I am without a boat am feeling a bit sick.

Ditto - have the yacht as close to home as possible. Count me in if you need delivery crew for the Irish Sea. The favourable winds in the Channel and North Sea are very disconcerting! I NEED some headbanging to windward in the irish Sea to remind me what sailing is really about.

The nearest I got to Ballycastle was Port Ellen - Or the Mull -either way - the Claymore you met is a bloody imposter - not only that but it sounds like he's been stealing drink that should be mine.!
