Oil Vaccum Pump

The Pela pump in various sizes is a great piece of kit, I use the 5l version and it made the job easy.
 
Small Pela pump "brilliant" and cost me less than £20 a few years ago from Compass.

Agree Pela is excellent.Run the engine for 20 mins to get oil hot before pumping out.I have just replaced my old Pela with a new one after 8 or 9 years.The suction had started to go on the old one.Still £20 ish for8/9 years use is a good deal.

Mine lost suction after only a few months use ... found the O-Ring under the "Top-Hat" that the pump unit fits over had broken. 20p for a new O-ring in local DIY shop - all working fine again. Pela sent me O-Ring free of charge when I contacted them about it ..

Maybe you can resurrect your old one ?
 
I have the Pela "football" type (2,5 l ) and I am not too happy.
OK, it works but I have to keep pumping all the time.
I greased all the vacuum connections / valves but it still looses its vacuum.
Not a great deal actually, I change the oil once a year, but if I had to buy one now I would certainly go for the cylindical type.
 
The best system I had was a 12v pump plumbed into the engine sump. It was simple and effortless, the oil was pumped into disposable containers (milk cartons).
I've also used the Pela type which are OK but you then have to decant the oil into containers for disposal and there is always the risk of spillage and drips.
Some diesel engines have a sump pump option available.
All this assumes your objective is to drain the engine oil, which may not be the case!
 
I'm no expert on Pela .. I only bought the 6 litre based on others recc'd's ..... and found the O-ring suspect.

I think that greasing bits is a no-no ... but may be wrong ..
 
The football type has a separate vacuum pump that goes on top of the container. Without grease (silicone grease) it would hardly work at all so I greased the attaching rubber and vacuum valve and this made it work. However, I have to pump every 10 seconds or so to keep it going. I think the cylinder type that you have is a better construction with the integrated vacuum pump.
 
I don't have the cylinder type ... I have the standard football type with separate pump on top. This was what I was saying - under the rubber "Top-hat" that the pump pushes over - is an O-ring ... if you prise the rubber top hat of carefully you'll find it. It is a real tight fit onto the raised neck moulding of the ball container ... Mine was goosed and I couldn't keep suction for more than a few sec's ... I changed the O-ring and bob's proverbial ...

The O-Ring is not suitable for any gasoline or solvent type fluids ... and I think mine was goosed by vacuuming out a mix of gasoline and diesel ... (my O-ring is better material now !!)

2.5 ltr ? you say yours is ? Haven't seen a Pela 2.5 ... I thought hwat I have - the 6 litre was smallest they did ?
 
Sorry SBC, I did not read your previous post well.
I have the Pela 2000 with a capacity of 2,5 liters.
I will have a look under the "hat" to see if the O-ring in mine is also broken, although I had this problem since it was new.

2.5 ltrs - I would think that would very quickly lose suction ... as its very small size .. My 6 litre I reckon is into just a few minutes only before needs a few more strokes on pump ..

I have only had trouble with size of the suction pipe .. the internal bore gets clogged easily, but then again - I use mine for bilges, fuel tank, anything that needs that last bit sucked up. I made up a large bore hose (1/4" job) for sucking out fuel tank and bilges eventually ... and that is a real boon. Used as another forumite advised - the stop cap for the suction connection - cut hole and fitted hose spigot to that.
