Oil question .

We in North Africa and I need to do a oil change on my Cat pump ,
Cat data suggest hydraulic ISO 68 oil ,
I can't seen to be able to buy it here , what would be a equal oil ?

Hi Vic,
as you may already have discovered, ISO68 is equivalent to SAE20, but that doesn't necessarily cater for the 'hydraulic' properties.

It's far from unusual, but not always wise, to use regular oils in hydraulic applications. This page (thanks, again, Google) gives some interesting info on the factors involved:

Have you just searched for the stuff in retail outlets? I'm sure there will be hydraulic specialists where you are, which may have the proper stuff or it's equivalent. Castrol SDS is one such.

If you are struggling and cannot find any. Why not wait until you leave (I assume you will be leaving via Malta) or if you go home bring some back with you. I am under the believe that Hydraulic Oil is "Non Flammable" and can be put in hold baggage. You only need about 1/2 litre. You can get genuine CAT ISO 68 Oil in 1 litre containers.

Hi Mac , yes by what Jonathan posted it does seem ISO 68 and SAE 20 is equal, but I was concern as you said using it for a hydraulic pump .
Expensive pump to knacker for the sake of a bit of oil .
 
On the assumption, (you don't state otherwise), that you have only tried marine or automotive sources, could I suggest you go to a tractor/ heavy machinery specialist?

This is North Africa, you buy what you can get . Marine shops have very little ok for bits of pipe , local anti foul even the odd sea cock , but it stop there unless it can be made , then that's a different story .
There car spare shops all over the place , selling most popular oils but non seen to have what I after .

Hence my suggestion to try someplace that deals in hydraulics, i.e. tractor/ heavy machinery workshop. Possibly some oppo there will sell you a litre or two for a little baksheesh.
 
We catching a train to Tunis in a few days ( that be an experience) so I see if I have any luck there .
As for the suggestion on getting hydraulic oil else where , he pump is a piston pump and works hard , bit concern if I put any hydraulic oil in it I mess it up .
In the worst case I do as been suggested and wait till I arrive back in Europe next year .

Don't worry about it!! I know you want to change the oil according to schedule and, of course, the Cat pump is an expensive lump so you want to look after it.
However the oil is just lubricating the crankshaft bearings and you can probably exceed the service interval by a factor of 2 without any harm since the oil is not subject to any combustion by-products etc.
If you can find equivalent hydraulic oil (as others have said try a hydraulic company they will use the same oil) in Tunisia then by all means use it but it will not harm your pump if you wait until you are back in Europe.
You could always buy it from CAT pumps but that will cost you about 5 times normal hydraulic oil!!

I have pickled it now so I be leaving it until I get back to Europe.
Should had emailed you as you have the same pump and would had use some kind of oil , can't see you buying cat oil :) .
We be doing a stop over in Malta once we leave here in the spring and there quite a few craine company there so I sure I find some Hydraulic oil there , I been offered all sorted here from ATF to 10/30 and been told it to the job ,

If quite surprising as their shelves are full of alsort of oil but no one have heard of ISO68 .
Tho the engine oil was very cheap , 4 lts of shell in Europe 24€ here it works out 14€ For 5 lts of the same shell oil ,
filters even cheaper 22 € for my Gen here 4€ just a different color :) .
Spray paint is cheap .
