Oil level rising on Caterpillar 3406E

For all those who have contributed on here. The oil analysis came back clean...... and the problem appears to have solved itself. The oil levels no longer rise, and are even falling as the engines use oil as per normal. My conclusions are : 1) I think that Latestarter may have nailed this when he said that people worry too much about the detail of oil levels, and I was definitely measuting in mm here..... so guilty ! 2) I think the engines were overfilled at some point (by my over enthusiastic deckhand !) and despite reducing the level afterwards there was simply too much oil in the system somewhere and as a result there were some strange readings coming through...... not sure I really udnerstand this !. and 3) the min max levels on my dipstick seem very close together, and it may have been incorrectly calibtrated originally ....i.e. the engine levels do vary minutely from time to time and this would normally fall between the min and max parameter and therefore not cause too much concern but because those marks are too cles together my alarm bells were set ringing as the level exceeded the max level.
Anyway....all good now.

Now all I need to worry about is persuading the Caterpillar agent to come and service them this winter ! (but Monsieur, the traffic is too bad for me to come down to Cogolins......) I guess i may have to wait for a cold, unattractive November week !

I'm late to this thread due to holidays/cruising

Glad your issue is fixed

I use Marine Power Tech for my Cat servicing, and generally like them. They're official Cat. I find the prices ok. They're in Golfe Juan and I do not know if they will travel to Cogolin

As usual JFM, you have the answers ! Many thanks, I will give them a try. I was talking to a Caterpillar engineer in Monaco who couldnt have been less interested !
