Hi All,

Could anyone recommend a powerful 12v pump that I could use to suck out the old oil when doing an oil change on my TAMD63P-A engines?

It's twin engine boat with very little room in the machine space to pump manually.

Ideally I'd like a pump that will suck the oil out of the dipstick tube, but could also be used for pumping new oil back in via the oil filler as its not possible to get a funnel into the filler on top of the engine due to restricted height! (about 3" only.)

Also, I have to remove and flush the antifreeze coolant before putting fresh in. Is there a tutorial anywhere to show how this can be done? My Volvo manual has some basic steps, but not very clear. Bearing in mind, I have limited space, I'd like to drain the old coolant without spilling it into the bilge, flush through with tap water and then fill with new coolant. Never done it on this engine before so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Paulo

You should be able to find "how to do........" On You Tube. Drawing oil out through the dipstick is a long business for larger engines. I have twin Cat 3126's, 25 litres of oil in each engine. Took me nearly 8 hours to change the oil. Will use an electric pump drawing out through an oil take off next time. I'm told it takes 10 mins per engine.

Al the 3126s I've fitted/serviced have had the hand pump with diverter valve so you can drain engine oil or gearbox oil, its a couple of minutes to pump out oil, some of te C12s I worked on had the optional electric pump fitted (Jabsco) and wasn't really that much quicker, the biggest problem was that it was only used once a year and would often need freeing off each time.

In answer to the original question I would stick with a Pela pump, although its a hand pump its by far the simplest and most reliable, if access is not ideal try extending the tube.

A couple of minutes to pump out 25 litres? Astonishing!!!

Go electric

I agree. I used to pump out the oil by hand on a pair of TAMD61A's and it took me ages and was a real pain.

I use a Jabsco electric pump now for my two TAMD63p engines. It's quick (circa 10mis / engine) and a doddle. I run the engines to heat the oil, attach two croc clips to the battery, put the pipe from the pump down the dipstick tube, switch on and sit back whilst the oil flows into a 25L container. Simples! I can do it without even getting my hands dirty.

I use a Jabsco Water Puppy pump, similar price and really really useful for lots of pumping. Oil out and in again, clearing bilges, diesel spills etc etc. Should be essential bit of kit for any boat owner as it makes handling liquids quick and clean.

I'm considering going electric as it's exhausting having to empty the Pela hand pump (although a great device) 6 times.

Question: Do you attach a hard plastic hose to the end of the suction end, so as that you can push it right down the dip-stick? Or do you just get something that creates a seal and push it on over the dip-stick tube (I have no idea how far the dip-stick tubes go on a KAD300, therefore not sure if I need to get a hose to shove down, or whether it will work by putting suction pipe over dip-stick tube)

Why not the same way as Pela?

Why not the same way as Pela?

No issue with using the Pela method, by way of attaching a hard plastic hose at the end of the suction end for the electric, but, if the dip-stick tube goes all the way down (and therefore can be used as a tube itself), then why bother as it would create less mess
