Down at the boat today and one of my friends accidently topped his battery with white spirit !! He was quite depressed.I think I would have been.

If the level was not too low to start with, I would have been hopeful it could be salvaged by drawing it out with a large glass pipette (turkey baster?) and topping up with distilled water - always assuming he acted quickly.

If he drains the lot by inverting the battery into a plastic bucket, and refilling it with fresh acid after flushing with water, he will save the battery. Any decent independant chemists shop will be able to supply the acid, as can some garages.

My sister-in-law nearly did that. She asked the pump attendant (a long time ago) for water to put in the tank as her husband had told her it was nearly dry. It seems to be a girl thing. She was a classics teacher.

I bet he was not quite as perplexed as my mate whose wife put 200 litres of water into a half full 400 litre diesel tank.

My ex-SWMBO told me yesterday that she had just filled her boyfriends new BMW X3 diesel with unleaded.

I was so beside myself with grief; I didn't know what to advise her to do.

Tell her it'll be fine if he runs it through and should get going circling his ( or preferably someone elses ) area immediately. ;)
