Oh dear, cat amongst the pigeons!

Hi M a quick reply. I was told by the UK Nordhavn guy that the 62 moulds have now been broken up so no more will ever be produced. Seems a shame and an end of an era.

Will post more on the 62 when I'm back home.

A catamaran is a great boat when you give it the right job.

If that job involves constantly looking for a berth in busy marinas, most owners get fed up with the cost or the necessary sucking up to harbour masters.

If the job includes mainly anchoring offshore, the quality of life aboard is very good. And if it's somewhere sunny I'm sure that it's even better.

So the thinking cap is back on. Do we update Eos, fit air con etc, and trundle off to the Med via the W coast of France, or bight the bullet and maybe change to a sailing cat with all the advantages that brings. But then, if going to the Med, where do we moor it with a beam of 8m, or do we look further afield? Lots of thinking to be done.

Hi John,

Great to see you are making plans to get out cruising, as you know I am a sailor at heart so that would be my preference, but going from EOS to a cat I would strongly recommend you try chartering a cat for a week maybe with a skipper or a friend who sails and see how you get on. As others have mentioned cats can have funny motions, both at rest and underway, which you may notice even more coming from EOS with her stabliser system. Having gone from cruising a sail boat to owning a motor boat I find the biggest difference between the two is that with the sail boat I used to enjoy the journey (although not for everyone, and there were times when I wished I could power up and get there a lot quicker), where as in the power boat the journey is more just a way to get somewhere and enjoy the boat once you get there. Probably a bit different for you on EOS but worth considering that your journey times will be different between the two.

I am sure others on here have much more recent experience but back when I went cruising in the Med there were times we struggled to get a berth, which wasn't a great problem as generally we were happy to anchor out if conditions allowed, I can imagine that being a more prevalent problem with a cat.

Its a big decision, hire a cat in the area you want to cruise and see how well it works out for you both, if you find you don't enjoy the actual sailing side of it then I'd suggest you don't go with a sail boat regardless of how many hulls or how much space it has otherwise you will come to begrudge lots of bits of string...

All the best,

Ants
