Went to SIBS yesterday and had a very enjoyable day, as expected loved the Nordhavn and Fleming, but both unfortunately over our budget. We have friends who run a Nordhavn 62 in the States who are thinking about selling and buying a sailing boat for the Med, or more specifically a cat, so thought we'd have a quick look at a few. Debs wasn't keen, but as we were right by the Fountaine Pajot stand I said let's have a quick look.

That's where the problems started. The quick look turned into half an hour or more. The Saba 50 is just enormous with so much socializing space both inside and out with a minimum of 4 double cabins and heads. And headroom, it's huge. I'm 6'3" and still had a foot or more almost everywhere! Ok, the fit out is not up to mobo standards but no doubt can be improved, but then the price is also so much less than a mobo with the equivalent space. I've never sailed, but knowing others who have learnt it doesn't seem an insurmountable problem, and with a cat everything is done more or less on the level. Of course there are motor cats, but sailing long distances in relative comfort does seem to make sense. Plus there are 2 small engines using tiny amounts of fuel if there's no wind. And enormous amounts of storage space.

So the thinking cap is back on. Do we update Eos, fit air con etc, and trundle off to the Med via the W coast of France, or bight the bullet and maybe change to a sailing cat with all the advantages that brings. But then, if going to the Med, where do we moor it with a beam of 8m, or do we look further afield? Lots of thinking to be done.

If you're going to SIBS do have a look at the Nordhavn, it's hard to believe it's a 5 year old boat, and the Fleming is superb. And whilst on the pontoon do have a quick look at the Fountaine Pajot. We also looked at the Lagoon, felt that we were treated as unnecessary nuisances by about 5 Ancasta staff on board who all totally ignored us and continued with their conversations, all in direct contrast to the attentive and friendly lady on the FP.

Have to say I didn't know it was 5 years old....unbelievable! That engine room, you could eat your dinner off of it! I loved it, very nearly got lost. My only gripe is the amount of dark cherry wood on display, very American.

the Nordhaven carpet was truly a hideous colour. The flemming was fantastic. You see a lot of cats around spain. many just anchor in bays or the larger harbours and tender ashore when travelling about. Getting a permanent berth may be tricky depending on where you want top keep it. Saying that the pontoon two rows in front of me is slowly filling up with cats ready for winter.

I agree with your comments on sailing catamarans. Loads of space. Seem to fit well with the med lifestyle if the "where to park" can be overcome. I have sailed all my life and if I can do it then it can't be that difficult. I've never actually sailed a cat but don't imagine it would be beyond me.

I believe:

1 cats have a bit of a funny motion at rest which can be difficult to counter.

2 they don't sail well to windward (just resign yourself to the fact and use the engines?)

3 in extremis they can pitchpole. If you do this in a 60 foot cruising cat the weather conditions will be too rough for the lifeboat so probably not worth worrying about.

I may be wrong, of course. But I think they are an interesting proposition.

Not just me then.. I ve only felt sick on a Harwich ferry in a F ??? and motorcats berthed at SBS. I had to get off them before I turned green.

I think TCM is going back to a monohull, maybe, he started a thread about buying one, why? He's been round the world in his cat, so why sell?

I get all the space, slippery hull stuff, but, its catamaran, maybe to a Polynesian fisherman they look ok, but to me, they just don't look like a boat and I can't get past that.

Yes, tcm has gone back to a monohull, not sure why, but he did quite a few transatlantic crossings and a circumnavigation in his cat, so couldn't have been that bad! I will ask him why he's changed.

Absolutely +1, but with the above corrections, i.e. forget the first bit in red and replace the second with my bit in blue. Not for me, thank you.

LJS, 'scuse if I'm going a bit o/t, but if you could tell us more on your friends N62, I for one would love to read about her.
She's probably my all time favourite Nordhavn.
No, wait. On second thought, forget the "probably".

Why do so many people waste time commenting on colours of carpets cushions and stuff, when you buy a bespoke boat You can have what you want, in may cases you can choose your layout why not comment on something of relevance

It's like the bunch on here who yearly moan about the boat show, I know some of those people don't really attend the show, they simply compare Fairline with Princess take a quick look at a Fleming grab some free drinks and sod off home, and then moan that the show was poor, just read the posts it happens every year

Sounds like the perfect day out to me!

Hi M a quick reply. I was told by the UK Nordhavn guy that the 62 moulds have now been broken up so no more will ever be produced. Seems a shame and an end of an era.

Will post more on the 62 when I'm back home.
