A while ago I bougt a second hand Navico 6500s and have just installed it. I have also just bought a brand new silva s12 handheld.

I am in mid bucks and wanted to check all is well so with them both on Lo power have quickly whizzed through the channels.

On the face of it they only seem to "talk to each other" on channel 16.

The navico is I guess the obvious culprit. But it picking up plenty of static on all channels.

Any ideas?

Could one of the radios be set up for USA operation?

With the exception of Channel 16 and, I think, one or 2 other channels, the USA channel frequencies do not match the frequencies of the same channels used by the rest of the world. eg channel 68 (I think) is not the same frequency on a USA set as an International one.

You might be able to check this as the Silva should be capable of switching between US and UK channel selections...

VERY odd

As you will have learned when you took your VHF (restricted) exam to obtain the necessary operator's certificate, all the designated ship to shore channels are duplex. You will of course know that this means that ship stations transmit on one frequency on those channels and shore stations transmit on the ship receive frequency and VV. Since you have two ship stations, you will of course not be able to hear on one set a transmission made on a duplex channel by the other. I cannot see though how you are unable to make contact between the sets on other simplex channels than 16. In fact, I would expect you to experience feedback very strongly with the sets so close.

Re: VERY odd

Actually full DSC exam. Some months ago. Yes of course some are duplex but if my memory serves then 06, 08,67 and several others should work.

I'll try again with a little more distance.

Re: VERY odd

Sorry wasn't suggesting illegality! (but there's a lot of it about.)

Is there a switch for the European waterways and or US channels on the hand held?

Hi,

Seems silly but I take it the Ch16 button or dual watch button isn't jammed on the s/hand Navico 6500. I don't know if there is a display to tell you whether this is the case. I think (but I may be wrong) that if you are on dual watch it will always transmit on Ch16 if that is the priority channel in the dual watch.

Just a thought.

Re: VERY odd

No offence taken, I really was asking for it for not thinking first. But after a morning wrestling with trailer brakes I was a little stressed.

Any way, a little distance bewtween sets and all simplex channels are working

This is certainly the case on many units - Simrad function that way. If dual watch is active you cannot transmit on anything but 16, even if you manually switch to the other channel. You have to physically take the unit out of dual watch mode.

Re: VERY odd

Wrong....not all ship to shore channels are duplex, in fact most are simplex, 16, 12, 14, 67 etc. the only ship to shore on the Clyde in duplex is 73. WHEN did you take your licence??????????
