Almost signed up for the Ocean YM course but decided against it at the last moment.

Is it worth doing if you're not planning on crossing oceans?

And what are the details of the qualifying passage - I assume doing the theory doesn't mean you can claim to be an Ocean YM.

For what else might you need it ?

Do you need it?

Not really.....only for your peace of mind.

YOU will know if you can fix your position using Astro. YOU will know if you are completant to deal with all foreseeable circumstances 1000 miles from land. YOU will feel the accomplishment of completing the passage having overcome whatever obstacles and rise up before you.

Makes no difference to insurance nor chartering rates in my experience......but you would have the badge!

In practice having the discipline to do a qualifying Ocean passage without giving in to the temptation of turning on the GPS is beyond most people, (although I understand that there were moves afoot to change the qualifying passge requirements).

Probably not worth the hassle unless you're planning to go further. Fair bit of trig and numbers, but also really useful passage planning and world-wide met stuff.

As Tony says, 600m and at least 4 full days at sea, of which 200m have to be more than 50m from land. You need to submit sights (eg sun-run-sun and compass check).

You have to hold a full YM to qualify - not just shorebased, and if you've completed the Ocean shorebased it's just an interview and check your sight reduction - otherwise it's an exam.

Doing the theory doesn't qualify you as YMO

Seem to recall something like 1 in 10 YM go on to qualify as YMO. Not sure for what else you might need it unless going long distance or professional

Shoreside course will give you the skills and tools to navigate without electronics so interesting if you have the time. Qualifying passage will enable you to find out if you really do enjoy ocean passages again interesting if you have the time, assuming you are a qualified YM (ie exam and not shore based) then a way of getting the passage is to sign on as delivery crew. As someone else posted if you can do it and are happy you don't need the qual unless you are going to turn it into a career.

Re: Do you need it?

This is exactly why I decided not to do it (this year, I'm still going to do it at some stage in my life for personal satisfaction). I don't NEED it as such, and would probably forget it all by the time I'd get round to doing the qual. passage.

I have got the full YM ticket so wanted to go the next step up. Think maybe I'll wait until I've got the Rassey 36 and indend to winter in the West Indies each year!

Re: Do you need it?

You'll just have to settle for a Moody 64 then...

Re:2 or 3

If you buy two you could stick some plastic between the hulls and have a CATABAVERMARAN or even three.. TRIBAVERMARAN.. ;)
