I am considering one of these .I like the 5 year warranty and 10 year battery life.

Anyone any comments good or bad about them ?

I have just bought one from Cactus to replace my McMurdo, lost out of my pocket a couple of years ago. It's quite tiny and will fit in a jacket very well so you can take it with you everywhere, in the dinghy etc.
Seems to me they are a great safety aid for the boat as well as yourself.

Graham asked about an EPIRB; you're both talking about different products. Ocean Signal's EPIRB1 is something big that lives in a bracket on the boat. Their PLB1 personal locator beacon and MOB1 AIS/DSC transmitter are devices designed to fit in your pocket or on your lifejacket.

I don't think so, the EPIRB under discussion is small.

The Ocean Signal RescueME EPIRB doesn’t look like it will very comfortably fit in a pocket or be stowed on a life jacket. Is there a smaller one out there which is being referred to?

EDIT: No, David and BDH were right and I was wrong. Left my original post in italics.

I checked and it was something like 80mm X 190mm which would be a bit bulky for my pocket, but given the size is its USP and a PLB that went in your pocket would be unremarkable I'm pretty certain were all talking about the EPIRB not the PLB. Maybe we need clarification. ?

It is the bracket mounted EPIRB I am enquiring about .It is the one in the picture in bdh 198 's post above.

Not normally meant for personal use it is either stowed on a bracket or in the grab bag to go with you into the life raft.

I have mine fitted just inside the hatch. If someone went over the side & was detached from the boat, I would lob it over immediately. I could throw it quite a distance. Then notify the CG what had happened. If I could not find them it would automatically set itself off & the light start to flash. Even if it was a hundred yards from the MOB it would float in the same tidal stream & aid a helicopter or life boat to find them if I could not.
I do not know if that would be a good strategy but it would get chucked in all the same.
I have also had a number of VERY near misses with shipping so, I have it handy in case I get hit & cannot get to the VHF. Even if I am a bit slow getting the life raft over, it should be floating somewhere near me. It just has to go into the water to activate it.
So i think that it is a sensible item to purchase.

Changed my mind and got a rescue me ocean signal plb instead.

Advantages are it is registered to you personally not the boat.As I often crew on other peoples boats it makes more sense. It works the same as an epirb but is smaller .

An epirb must be able to transmit for 48 hours a plb is only guaranteed to transmit for 24 hours which I think should be plenty for coastal sailing.

I just registered it with ukcg beacon registry online got a reply that it may take more than 20 weeks for them to complete the registration but in an emergency use it anyway and rescue services will respond.Well that's comforting !

When I sent details in for registering my EPIRB & PLB ( about 3 years ago) I waited about 3 weeks & received a phone call from HMCG. registry dept

( I think it was them But to be honest I have forgotten so apologies if I have caste aspersions on the wrong organisation, but one will get the idea)

The chap spent about 12 minutes telling me all the reasons it would be 6-8 weeks to get confirmation that the details had been logged. When he finished he got a bit huffy when I pointed out that instead of phoning me ( which he had been instructed to do) he could have transferred the info onto a computed data base & the job would have been done. A girl ( sorry I should say person - but ladies are good at it) in a data office would have done it in about 3 minutes flat.
So would someone email the RYA & get them to ask why it takes 20 weeks to do a job that probably takes a few minutes. Are they really so disorganised? What else can they possibly be doing with the information ? Other than sticking it into a computer programme.

Or even, a gov.uk front-end could be provided and we could all enter and update our details directly, without any ongoing clerical work on their part at all.

So what did you buy and how much are they
I bought an Ocean Signal rescue me PLB for £240 from force 4. With a 7 year lifespan I think its a lot of safety for about £35/year.

Unlike the EPIRB you can legally use the PLB on a different boat or even ashore if you go hill walking or whatever.
