Hi
Thinking of moving our Antares 9.8 out to Gibraltar so we can use her far more and explore the med. Can anyone tell me about this Marina have been offered a berthing on Pier One going to fly out next week probably but would love some info before hand. We are thing that we will probably spend about 6 months a year on the boat maybe more.

Thanks Denise

There are only three or four takeoffs and landings a day - plus the very occasional military jet - not a big deal.
Capt Sensible, who was there for years, will probably be along to answer any specific queries you have.

Does Gib fall under the Schengen rules?
Still in negotiation I believe with som Ad Hoc arrangements but even so the countries surrounding it are all part of Schengen which could make 6 months continuous cruising out of Gibraltar problematic.

Not in Schengen yet but it's likely before too long which, as you say, will severely restrict sailing. I wouldn't fancy having to sit it out in Morocco every 3 months to reset the 90/180 clock or, as it stands at the moment Gib for 3 months.

Hiya. Spent quite a lot of years in Marina Bay.....Ocean Village. Really enjoyed it but that was before the Brexit thing.

That's a live webcam that shows the marina though a sector of its travel. Looks like the building works on the west side of the marina have finished now, which was noisy and dirty. It does feel very enclosed there now....we stayed on the floating hotel for a night last year. Its arrival, plus Brexit were the two main reasons we left.

Gib is a fun place though with a lot to do. Some moan but it's not hard to get around and explore. 6 months might be pushing it though! You could make a lot of trips though in three months of schengan rules travel. Either in the Med coast of Spain or round to Cadiz, whales permitting. Plus there is a full service marina in Tangier now plus MarinaSmir a few hours away in Morocco. Went there lots.

The marina staff are great, all old friends now. They do clearance in and out for small vessels on behalf of Customs and Immigration. I'm well out of date for the latest rules there and rather than guess, I would ring them direct and get the proper routine.

As with anywhere, it will be what you make it. Hope you enjoy your visit!

Oh and being next to the runway was, for me and plenty of others, fascinating!

Was based in Gib for nearly 2 years. The morning Monarch (remember them?) flight was a great alarm call taking off from literally 150 yards away (a bit like that Caribbean Island airport without the breeze) but if the flight was delayed you were late for work..... Great place. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I was part of the fit out of Ocean Vilage Apartments.

My SIL worked for them, we had a friends and family card, pitch up at the airport, flash the card and straight on to standby, coat 15 quid a flight

Gib's an old hunting ground of mine, and has a special little spot in my somewhat 'soft' sailors heart.. lots of time spent there dating back to 1976.. 🤪

My marina experiences are limited to the old Sheppards, both in the 70s, 80s, and Marina Bay in the 2000s.. Sheppards being the most comfortable of the two. Marina Bay is fine (has it been renamed) but the 'surge' can be really wicked. I've seen a lot of damage to boats there, so good mooring ropes, snubbers, and good fenders are a must. Re the aircraft.. it never bothered me whatsoever.. I got used to it.. (y)

I spent several months in Gibraltar and I loved the place. As a french norman, we were really welcome in Marina Bay with a very friendly staff as mentionned below. Prices were very correct and I found a very reliable and professional service with James Molinari ltd. The team did a very good work on my heavy duty John Deere and helped me a lot to collect spare parts for my Keypower hydraulic stabs from West Canada. I will be happy soon to share a beer or a gin tonic with John Collins, perfect gentleman with a real sense of humor, in the heart of this small ' ex so british' island.
Last year, on a hurry, I filled again my tanks in Gib but was a little bit disappointed by the way cepsa gib calculated the bill..hope this will be better next july...or I will go to the next diesel station.
I remember also old times with Sheppard! Last serious chandlery stop before the passage to Carib in the nineties😉

Sadly, the hardest part now is getting a berth in Gib’. With the demise of Sheppard’s marina and the loss of berthing in Marina Bay (now ‘Ocean Village) presumably due to the redevelopment and also the space absorbed by the cruise ship/hotel/casino, Gib’ is no longer the cruising crossroads that it used to be. It’s a real shame as for the moment at least, it’s one of the few places where us non EU citizens can stop the Schengen clock. I’ve been lucky enough to get a berth in Gib’ on only one of my last 5 transits through the area.

so , how about sitting at anchor in the bay , taking any necessary dingy trips to shore , does that suffice for the schengen clock ?

Yachts in transit now tend to use the Marina in La Linea. But fuel up in Gib.

I actually like Marina Alcaidesa/La Linea but being in Gib’ makes visiting friends easier (I used to live and work here) and for the moment at least, stop the Schengen clock.

I was refuelling in Gib’ this morning and was hailed by a friend to say that the marina had found a place for me after all (booking refused a few days ago) so I’m there now 👍.

That's a shame.. I've got a lot of affection for Gib, and a lot of memories tied up with it. Have both lived and worked there on occasions going back to the mid 70s. In fact I actually got my first taste for the sailing life there in 1976 when I was living aboard a friends boat in the old Destroyer Pens.

Of course its always been a stopover on passage to the Med, or out of it too for me, and now the years are clocking on a bit:D I do often get the urge to do just one more trip to the Greek Islands and call in to mooch around all my old haunts on the way, but from what you're saying Goldie I'm going to be disappointed in Gib..

That's the sort of friend you need to buy a pint for 😁
