O\'Brian film

Oh God, so they're making a film are they of one of the Aubrey/Maturin sagas? Trepidation is not the word. Now, I don't know this Bettany bloke but it seems as plain as plain to me that Ian Holm should play the part of Maturin. But I could never decide who would play Aubrey. I can't say Russel Crowe springs to mind but he might be ok.
HMS Rose looks perfect, though. But can she play the part of a 'sweetly sailing' ship?!
Which actors would you have chosen?

Bettany is soooo wrong for Maturin. For a start he is physically far too big-specially when stood next to Russell Crowe. Actually Crowe dosn't look too bad as Jack but the accent is a bit off putting.
Agree that Simon Callow would make good Maturin , bit too old now though.
Maybe Rhys Ifans for Maturin would be an interesting casting- thought he was good in Shipping News.

Let's face it - NOBODY is good enough to play Aubrey or Maturin! It's a film that should never have been made and come November when its released we'll probably have to put up with a load of media hype. Oh dearie me.

I'm going to sit in a cave with my eyes and ears covered until it all goes away.

(Mind you, I think R Crowe is a decent bloke and he's got in to a bit of sailing as a result).

Martin Clunes for Jack Aubrey - the chatacter in the book is a big guy, curly blonde hair and tends to put his foot in it, calling a spade a spade.

Michael Portillo for Maturin - aristocratic connections, slightly sinister and smooooth. I know MP is not officially an actor, but all MPs are actors in fact. He is on-stage far more often than many other resting actors.

Re: O\'Brian film

Could we find a small part for Julian Clary in this production?
I havent read the books, but I believe he was a blinding Captain Hook at the Bridlington Palladium last season.
All the lad needs is one big break and he could be the next Olivier
