Nylon packing

Stanchions on our boat are a bit wobbly and someone made a throwaway comment about using "Nylon Packing". What on earth is it and where do I get some?

we replaced a bent one last year, could not find any nylon suitable so cut up a plastic tesco milk bottle and wrapped that round the end. It's about the right thickness and works a treat. Not technically correct though.

i belive they are also " insulators" to keep metal part isolated from each other
