I know its an odd time to start thinking about laying up - but just had a chat with Pete at Fleetwood (where Newtsville is now happily based) and he tells me that 8.5 tons and 37 foot is too big for their crane, and they certainly don't have any cradles to fit her!

Suggestion has been to take her upto Glasson for the winter. Got a few jobs to do (nothing serious) - the ones likely to require help are the installation of hydrovane and the SSB installation (I assume there's someone in/near Glasson who could help with these?). I know Glasson isn't the easiest place to get into, but I'm hoping only to go in once and then out once after the lay-up!

Any other suggestions on the best place to haul-out for the winter (we live in Newcastle - so anywhere is a drive - Fleetwood is good though as we have family there and know lots of locals to aid in getting jobs completed etc).

Also, does anyone know how busy Glasson gets over the winter - would I need to book a cradle for her in advance (I would prefer a cradle to chocks if at all possible!).

Looking forward to hearing from all you Lancashire sailors!!

Jonny

Hi, I am based at Glasson, the Lunes no problem if you know where to go, just helped a friend in and out a couple of times on his 7ft draft, never touched bottom even on relatively low tides (7.6M). Would happily give you a hand with the SSB and navigating in if you wanted, and prob best to book, it got pretty full last winter

Had boats lifted in and out at Glasson quite a few times, the service is good & they know what they are doing. Does get full in the Winter, as lots of boats come North as its cheaper.

Hasnt Glasson been sold, the yard I mean to the waterways? Are the facilities for work as good as they were?

Had a look round Glasson recently and there are plans for improvements. The chap who now runs it is a keen and experienced sailor.

But is it run by thw BW? If it is, who does the work, how expensive is it, etc. etc. What size lift do they have?
