Nuts are off........Seacock Woes!!!!

My respect to thesaintlyone for taking a lot of flak on this thread but still showing good grace in keeping us updated.

Ignore the knockers .......... as they say! :)

Richard

Indeed Richard. I'm not knocking him, but he does make he is making a meal out of 4 bolts :)

Why didn't you just drill the bolts out from the outside ?

You do like to make a meal of small jobs.

To be honest paul didnt try that was so bloody frustrated by the end of today that I genuinely dont care if I have to fork out for a new blakes. but yes probably should of tried that.
Its where the mechanical smarts kick in someone better would have tried different methods like that one. A lesson learned in patience. Will still probably drill them out at the expense of a internal backing plate ?

Thankfully it all appears to be just adding new parts after this job is done so pleased with that the boat is pretty basic so nothing really to be a problem just modernizing things like electrics and adding a auto bilge pump etc

It's surprising that you were not able to turn the bolts from outside, sure you are telling us everything:rolleyes::p However I think once you have cut away the wooden backing plate and cut through the bolts the seacock will come out and all you worries will be over. I look forward to hearing of your success and another thread where can I get or how can I make a wooden backing plate for a Blakes seacock;):encouragement: Good luck.

Well yes hopefully. Just couldnt get a grip on the nuts enough to pry the 40 year old sealant. Tried cutting bolt shapes but it was a bit hash TBH. ? if anyone has suggestions on a new backing plate ?

A decent bit of teak or failing that marine ply and two Starett hole saws, there are other makes. Cut the larger diameter first:p then the second smaller one, jobs a good un:encouragement:

Keep it simple, decent marine ply will make a good backing plate with a couple of coats of bilge paint. Let's get this job done!

I was rather hoping we were going to get some positive news and an update on the successful outcome.

Sorry been crazy busy with work & vistiting friends/fly fishing trips north been a bit lapseon the boat but will pop along again soon and hopefully finish it off. Still struggling to sell the little 21footer which isnt helping the new boat budget. Some interest but mostly twats from gumtree who all seem to be clueless

At least someone else understood my point!

For those of us still working and with family committments you have to balance things accordingly. As much as I like tinkering with boats, bikes and cars - if it makes more sense to buy a replacement part or pay someone else to do the job then I will.

However that only makes real sense if:

1. You lack the skills.
2. You actually do extra hours at your charge out rate while the job you have subcontracted is actually being done.

In other words if you have the skills and are just sat on your arse watching telly (not doing extra hours at your charge out rate) while the sub contractor is doing the job - then you are losing out on a number of fronts.
