Back now from Plymouth to Southsea Marina - Forecasts were absolute B*****ks. Intead of light airs we had:

Day 1: Leave 6 am plymouth for weymouth- Motor as far as Start in calm - wind picks up across lime bay NW up to 28 knots - brilliant reach under full sail in totally blue skies. arrive Portland inner passage at 17.00 haviing punched a 2 knot tide all the way.

Day 2. Leave weymouth 9.30 for Yarmouth. Flat calm - motor to Lulworth under blue skies - some of crew have never been their. Westelry wind starting to grow - put up everything - Spinnaker - mizzen staysail - the lot. Arrive Anvil point against big spring tide. Pilot book says its very deep close too - so creep up shore keeping in the strong back eddy within 30 feet of rocks - (least water 8 meters at Low tide). Now the eddy runs out - so start engine as tide is running at at least 6 knots - making 1 knot over ground. - Log now stops working - bloody autohelm - so don't know speeed through water - must be 8 knots.

Continue to run all the way right through Hurst under spinnaker with apparent wind up to 26 knots in the gusts. Bloody marvellous - Arrive Yarmouth at 17.30

Day 3 - wind North 16 to 20 knots in Solent to cowes - wonder full reach in blue skies.

Best 3 days sailing ever - no beating at all - limited use of engine.

I leaving Corsair in the water till the end of Jan so we will do some winter sailing for the first time - hope its as fun as you all make out!

Chris

Sounds perfect. Went sailing for 1st time in 3 weeks this w/end. Blue skies, perfect winds, v few other boats, anchored up Saturday night in favourite creek totally alone except for bird life. We're also leaving Santa Teresa in as long as possible - here's to discovering the joys of winter sailing!

So that's where you got to! We were in Yarmouth on Saturday over on Hayles pontoons and looked out for you arriving, but I had thought you would have gone for the early start from Weymouth in view of the strong tides. Actually by 1730 we were down below with the heater on watching Miss Marple on BBC2 whilst the wine warmed up for dinner. We left Yarmouth just after 1100 on Sunday to go back to Poole but I guess you would have gone before then.

And back at Plymouth

There is a sorry gap in the moorings. Thought of you Saturday the wind in the sound was poor, but what a difference on Sunday, just great. I actually got around to get to Newton Ferrers, had a bit of touch and go comming out before you get to the bar as it was only 30 mins after low water, what a lovely day...

Today BBC Radio Cornwall said it was 16* at Rame head, more like spring than winter /forums/images/icons/smile.gif I've decided not to come out for antifouling till after easter, here's to more winter sailing.... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Aha, gotcha. Myself and husband are based in Brighton - boat however is based on the River Medway in Kent, hence creeks. We're bringing Santa Teresa to the South Coast next Spring, prolly March/April - despite having dirt cheap mooring there the petrol expended thus far driving up to Gillingham most weekends must add up to more than the cost of a Brighton Marina berth annually. We loved the pottering about in the Medway and Swale, so will be mooring at Chi when the boat gets here to compare and contrast muddy creekage in Kent and Sussex. Brighton Marina would be only 5 mins from us but we're not racers, and like to have a bit more to look at in a days' sailing than what one gets from there. Having said that plans can, and do, change, and we may find the lure of convenience just too strong a pull...and it's been sooo beautiful in Brighton today, we could have just run down to the marina if the boat was here, jumped in and been off...

Re: And back at Plymouth

Newton - that's where I was brought up.. Mother ran the sailing school, father owned the boat yard, started the yacht club and was harbour master for a number of years after the Torrey Canyon. I still get honorary entry into the regatta when I need it...

The reassuring thing was going back with the boys a few years ago. All they wanted to do was mess about in dinghies, row, and fish for crabs with bacon - just like 40 years or so ago.

Re: 8 meters at Low tide

If you had 8 meters at Low tide, you were too far out!

Re: 8 meters at Low tide

I chickened out at 8 meters seeing the size of the rock block on the shoreline. How close can you go? we could have kept the back eddy for another 200 meters.
