We have to get a Albin Ballad (30ish ft, wineglass long fin sloop) to Plymouth from Shoreham for hull repairs in November. 3 good sailors available, but only for the second weekend, so no chance of choices other than to go by road. What advice would forumites give for this passage?

Hull opened at the start of the Triangle, by mast step. New rigging woound too tight perhaps. Temporary repair made by yard who will do thorough job this winter, old school mate and dinghy sailing companion of skipper, with 5 similar jobs to same boat under his belt, so Plymouth it has to be.

The proverbial 'accident waiting to happen'.

Boat with dodgy hull and temporary repair, which can only be moved on one weekend in November, so no chance of waiting for weather window. Also trip is most likely to be a beat, so stress on hull would be greatest. Although the trip is essentially coastal, there are still plenty of places where the nearest port of refuge will be some hours away.

Sounds to me like it might be a good way to get a free helicopter ride.

Also what would your insurers make of it?

Road trailer, methinks.

If the weather turns sour the temporary repair is going to worry you all the way even if it is sound.

If you get weatherbound somewhere the short term marina fees will quickly overtake the cost of road transport.
