Back safely on Mersea I am glad to say. The following is an overview of weeks 4 to 6 (this current week)

Permanent

1. A longish NtM from Trinity House listing the Aids to navigation fitted with AIS. I have put the list in a downloaded PDF and have include the full UK list in case it helps those of you with ambition. Most are our region though.
2. The West Blyth QR has been moved again, this time to the South-West. I guess this might be its new permanent position. Don't forget that it's light characteristics were changed to a simple QR a little while back.
3. Two obstructions and three groups of yellow special marks (two groups of which marked the two obstruction) not far from Brown's Ridge (north-east of Lowestoft and a little way out) have been removed. All pretty deep water stuff.

Temporary

1. Usual annul update of the environmental monitoring buoys and recorders twix the London Gateway and the Sunk Centre. There is a downloaded PDF of the images from the notice.
2. Some usual maintenance dredging in Harwich Harbour and apporaches. Spoil going to the Gabbard disposal site.
3. Maintenance on Rochester Railway Bridge.
4. Bore Hole drilling in Lowestoft harbour.
5. Replacement of the Light Structure on the Isle of Grain power station outfall.

That's it. I am afraid I am in Armenia next Monday (trying to cool down after Nigeria). But only one week and normal service will resume.

And I had always assumed you were a retired gentleman living a life of leisure. :o

I do appreciate your NTMs.
Even though they rarely affect my sailing (don't do the shallow bits) I find it reassuring that you're there.
Not sure it makes sense, but I hope you catch my drift.

+1 thanks

Oh, I have retired. But SWMBO likes the exotic holiday, and the new kitchen - and the Armenia work which is quite short will pay for the new sails. I am going to retire again very soon. Clever stuff though going from 36 to 40 degrees one week to -8 the next!

The NtM stuff is not normally too difficult if I can do it every week. The system is well set up now. Missing a couple of weeks and doing three in one go is to be avoided but actually these past three weeks were quite easy. Lets hope next week is light as well. I'll probably check the daily lists on Saturday and that way I might be able to do it in advance.

I am getting really cheesed off with all the mark movements off the London Gateway site, e.g. the West Blyth this time. I've already got Imrays doing a revised chartlet for ECP, can't keep up with it. perhaps we should leave the buoys off, and put in a legend "Buoys hereabouts, don't know where, keep a sharp lookout".

The sooner we have live charting with a GPS/AIS beacon on each buoy, the better. No need for chart updates at all then. Just switch on your plotter and let it find all the buoys for you.
Will have to think of a clever plot other than TeamSurv for constantly moving sea beds though. :o

It's a bit like looking at charts on television...

waits for

Luddite alert, luddite alert.

Wots a television?

Oh yes, television. That's that thing that once was full of grey and white snow and now after 50 years of development has nicely coloured pixcellations. Good that init?

I was thinking this winter I ought to recalibrate my lead line.

Er look here. I know the millimetre was invented for traffic in Cairo because I've been there and seem it in operation. Anyone more than 1mm behind the car in front is hooted. In Nigeria if you are more than 1mm behind the car in front, a car/van/bus or ancient Bedford TK will cut in. But I didn't know the millimetre had a use in this country. Perhaps in Mauritius where they drive on the left and use kilometres per hour?

Are there any other pointless changes I haven't noticed? Oh by the way, if the Drugs Agency in Nigeria finds a cannabis farm the crop is estimated in Acres but they record the clearance of the cannabis plants in Hectares. Anyone able to explain please?
