1. RIVER THAMES - LOWER HOPE REACH TO SEA REACH - RESEARCH EQUIPMENT DEPLOYMENTS -
on or about 11th December 2023, contractors instructed by the Environment Agency will undertake works to deploy 2 hydrodynamic monitoring devices, known as Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), to the bed of the Thames in 2 separate locations. The deployment of the ADCP instruments will be undertaken from the vessel JENNY D and once deployed in their respective positions, will each be marked on the surface by a lit Special Mark with character Q Fl Y (5) 20s 0.3. The locations of the ADCP deployments are as follows - Site A: In vicinity of Mucking Flats 51˚ 29’.57 N 000˚ 27’.56 E, Site B
In vicinity of Shoeburyness 51˚ 30’.00 N 000˚ 48’.00 E. These 2 ACDP instruments, marked by buoys on the surface, will remain in place for approximately 3 months from deployment, after which time the equipment and buoys will be recovered. The equipment and/or buoys may be serviced from time to time while deployed. During deployment and recovery, and any periodic servicing while deployed., requirements to proceed with caution or at slow speed will be made in accordance with the procedure set out in the Port of London Authority’s Port Information Guide, under ‘London VTS’, ‘Section 4’. International Code Flags ROMEO YANKEE, will be displayed whenever a requirement to proceed with caution or at slow speed is in force. The display of these signal flags will be in addition to any signals, lights or shapes specified by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at sea and local regulations. London VTS will broadcast further information, as required, on VHF Channel 69 & 68. This Notice will remain published until such time as the ACDP instruments and buoys have been recovered, at which time it will be withdrawn without further notification.
2. RIVER THAMES - WOOLWICH REACH TO LOWER HOPE REACH - WOOLWICH & MUCKINGS GRAB SAMPLING OPERATIONS - On or about Sunday 10th December 2023 the Environment Agency are undertaking grab sampling operations in Woolwich Reach and the Muckings. As part of these works a series of samples will be taken from the vessel KATABATIC across two locations, as shown on the chartlets see all images at: Notices to Mariners During sampling KATABATIC will display the lights and shapes as prescribed in Rule 27 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 namely:
• By day, three black shapes in a vertical line the highest and lowest of which are balls and the middle one a diamond.
• By night, three all round lights in a vertical line the highest and lowest of which are red and the middle one white.
The KATABATIC may also fly RY flags in conjunction with a broadcast “proceed with caution” request by the London VTS at all times she is engaged in sampling operations. Requirements to proceed with caution or at slow speed will be made in accordance with the procedure set out in the Port of London Authority’s Port Information Guide, under ‘London VTS’, ‘Section 4’. Between samples the KETABATIC will be able to clear the channel and allow traffic to pass as necessary. Masters of passing vessels should have due regard for the effects of their wash including the possibility of rebound from the river wall and the combined effect of wash from other vessels. The KATABATIC will maintain a continuous VHF watch on VHF Channel 14 or VHF Channel 68 as applicable. London VTS will broadcast the position of the KATABATIC and further information on VHF Channel 14 & VHF Channel 68.
3. RIVER THAMES - NORTHFLEET HOPE - DREDGING OPERATIONS - On or around 7th December 2023 the vessel JENNY D will commence plough dredging operations at Cemex Halls Northfleet, Northfleet Hope. Contractors carrying out the work will be erecting scaffolding over the sea wall which will extend seawards at the two locations highlighted below. The access platforms will only extend into the river by approximately 2 – 3 meters, will not touch the river bed and will not pose a hazard to navigation. Contactors have been instructed to vacate the access platforms when any ships are transiting the two sites, however, all vessels are advised to be vigilant when navigating in Limehouse Reach, be prepared to reduce their speed and wash if required and be aware of any safety boats deployed close to both sites.

Vessels approaching Ipswich Lock may experience additional currents as they make their approach. Caution needs to be taken by small vessels navigating in the vicinity of the lock/barrier at the time of opening. Vessel bound to the area upstream of the Tidal Barrier should always observe the Red/Green traffic lights at the Barrier. For more information contact Orwell Navigation Services on VHF Ch 68. For additional information please contact: Burnham Yacht Harbour Marina Ltd Tel 01621 782150
9. Blakeney Harbour - South Sands weather beacon - The south sands beacon is currently lying on the sand and the area should be avoided. Ipswich Tidal Barrier Test. I note you have stated that after the test they will re open the barrier gradually. I would like them to re open it suddenly so we can all see what happens !!!

Eek! This is the 13th.

And today while as I watching the tide I saw that it failed to reach the predicted height. But as it is at least its 11,800,000th tide I suppose it is entitled to get a bit tired every so often:sleep:

As to the barrier, perhaps it might cause a 'counter-bore' - at least locally. I remember when we were preparing to leave the marina berth at St Valerie sur Somme there was a flow of 3 kts or so for 30 minutes or so and the water rose pdq. I was wondering how TG would be able to reverse directly against the flow when all of a sudden, things eased. None of which is anything to do with someone opening a barrier! :)
