Not a where is, but who is this?

I think some are missing the point here. Or maybe I am.

To make a mistake is something we all do. I just happen to think that for a skipper to take a boat of that size into a marina to moor without briefing the crew or giving any instruction is asking for trouble. We can't always rely on other people to get us out of the poo.

But he's probably got his day skippers ticker (it may even be that the ink's dry on it), so that's okay.

I certainly dont claim, to 'know it all', no one does and we never do stop learning, but with such limited experience that I couldnt brief a crew, I didnt go out and charter a 37 ftr and put 8 people on it. I restricted my cockups to the two of us and a 22 footer!

Unfortunately, these days, folk do seem to think that that a certificate means they can do so why bother with a piddly little boat when you can get straight into a 37 footer?

There's always someone to get you out of trouble. If you run out of fuel, you can call the RNLI, so what's the worry?

Who needs responsibility or self reliance?

After reading this can I make it perfectly clear that if you ever see our boat do a bad berthing -then its on charter ! and if you see some superb bit of berthing then we are on board - I think maybe not!!

The smiley thing is meant to indicate a tongue in cheek comment.

But seriously, we don't know all the facts. I have been on the receiving end of newly, and not so newly, qualified skippers appalling foul ups and bad practices.

Maybe, he is fine on his own boat and froze on this boat.

Maybe, the people on board lied to him about their abilities.(has certainly happened to me more than once).

Maybe he had briefed his crew for the original manoeuvre and then froze when it all went pear shaped.

Maybe he was a complete beginner who over estimated his abilities because he believed the sailing schools propaganda.

Maybe he's been sailing for a long time, but is just an unteachable, arrogant so and so who always blames his crew.

I've met them all, and probably quite a few of us have.

I just bare in mind that even with my many years of very varied experience there are still times when things happen in a way that would make any one on shore think I was a complete novice - and I find usually the more crew I have the more likely it is to happen.

I would just be wary of being too condemnatory and of the use of the word 'never'.

I must also say, that having arrived in such style, I would probably encourage my crew to be a little more circumspect about their partying and volume levels. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think as people are pointing out, and I agree, anyone can make a cock up, the irony of my post is that its Sunsail again!

Out of interest, as a charterer, how do you judge the competence of the skipper taking the boat?

[/ QUOTE ] Would that be dramatic, Socratic or cosmic? I am looking for the irony but can't see it in any of its forms.

Maybe it's not pedantic either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Ah, but therein lies the irony. Well spotted.
