Backstays
With that mast you certainly will not trim anything with the backstays. You should use them if you have the staysail up in a good brise. Thats when I put them on.
Issues
My mast step is in stainless. You may have to watch for black steel or galvanized mast steps.
The deck fills have been put on top of the teak deck. That is prone for leaking.
The rudder may have some ingress of water. As nearly every boat does.

From the photo linked in post #6, that's clearly the case.

We have a Northwind 435, different designer and layout but similar vintage. Very well built, although the chainplates were substantially beefed up between the earliest examples and ours. Our interior joinery is sapele. If the keel is encapsulated, as is ours, inspect it very carefully for any signs of grounding which can cause water ingress and delamination. Don't ask how I know...

Thank you both very much. Good to hear they seem pretty solid. I need to think about the running backstays as we'll be shorthanded most of the time.

Hi all and apologies for the thread resurrection but we are now thinking of going to look at a Northwind 47 so any more opinions on them from people who have had them?

I met him & went aboard this yacht in Gibraltar some years ago.

He & his wife, had been an a fast track YM course at UKSA & had employed several off the same course as crew.

Thought it was bigger than 47' though.
(Is this it? http://www.lazyjacques.com/)

He owned "Frere Jacques
Very friendly, mostly French staff, With one AA Rosette and possibly another on the way, the food is excellent. Great views as it's down on Riverside Walk next to Kingston Bridge. You can sit inside or outside and children are welcome. Open for lunch and dinner. Phone 020 8546 1332"

Oh no. Another zombie thread.

But then, in a time of zombie government, why should one expect any less.

(My apologies Andrew. Nice boats indeed. Welcome to the forum).
