I have recently purchased a 25 year old Northwind 47, and I'd really like to make contact with any other owners of the same yacht. Mainly just for fun but also for some advice and guidance.
Anyone on this forum got also one, or know of any?
Don't think there's many in the UK, but I might be wrong.

cheers

Nice Boat.

I used to know a couple with a smashing one of these. He owned a resturant on the Thames, and the boat was called Lazy Jaques..I think the spelling's right.
Last seen setting off for Turkey.

I wonder where they are now??

I met him & went aboard this yacht in Gibraltar some years ago.

He & his wife, had been an a fast track YM course at UKSA & had employed several off the same course as crew.

Thought it was bigger than 47' though.
(Is this it? http://www.lazyjacques.com/)

He owned "Frere Jacques
Very friendly, mostly French staff, With one AA Rosette and possibly another on the way, the food is excellent. Great views as it's down on Riverside Walk next to Kingston Bridge. You can sit inside or outside and children are welcome. Open for lunch and dinner. Phone 020 8546 1332"

Aha, that's them....!

Yes, that's the boat, and them. Can't remember their names though. They were here in Corfu for a couple of weeks and their friend who was sailing with them, did the Corfu regatta with us.

One day, if I'm in London, I'll make my way to the restaraunt.

Lovely boat, and really nice people.

That's a Contest 48, the deck house looks very similar. Lovely looking yacht.
If I can figure out how to do it, I'll put a picture of my Northwind up.

I have one, and know quite a few owners (I am in Barcelona, where they used to be made). Great boats, sail well and made to very high standards. Every owner I know is happy with them. Mine is the earlier version (with foldable saloon table and a second wheel in the Pilothouse). The second series is with the non-foldable table and no second wheel. A few cm more beam in the second version also. PM me, glad to chat about the boat!

I had a plan of one at one time. I thought that it was close to the ideal in terms of layout.

Thanks Daniel, good to hear the positive comments, I will PM you.
Mine has the foldable table, but no second wheel. I think she is an earlier one (1986 build) and the original owner must have specified no internal wheel.

Are there any Northwind yachts/owners here in the UK? I have been looking for a deck saloon for ages and there seems to be a really limited selection here in the UK. I am also looking out for a Seastream 43, but none for sale in the UK, only Holland and Venezuela! Another make I am looking for is Belliure, but never seen one outside the Med, they seem to have all of the best yachts there!

Did you see the RAF pennant? This explains the huge plotter: owner is a retired NAV.

If I may add a point.... they are slow :D:D

Hello Open Blue. I have a NorthWind 47 from 1986. But I am from Norway and it is not too many of them here :) Wisited Shetland this summer and loved the boat. I have done a lot of things with it and there is still something to do.

Cheers Jonny

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. We are considering negotiating on a Northwind 47, which is well equipped but in poorish condition, mainly cosmetic but with a fair bit of wear and tear. I have some questions about them.

My first question is: are the running backstays required to be used when sailing? If not, what are they for? The broker suggests they are not required but help with sail trim. I'm not sure they would be specced unless required on a cruising boat, although there is a proper split backstay. Also thinking when sailing downwind with an assym and main, would an accidental gybe result in potential loss of the rig if the running backstays were in use? (I guess a fuse / weak link could be rigged to the running backstay set up, but if so this implies they are not strictly required to support the mast)?

Second question is generic - the interior of the boat is teak - it is in poor nick cosmetically and quite dark. What can be done to improve it's condition and hopefully lighten it up - does it need sanding down and re-varnishing in a lighter varnish, or can it be painted (is this taboo)? Is revarnishing a straightforward (if time consuming) process?

Finally, are there any known structural issues I need to look out for?

Many thanks!
