Hi

I would welcome any comments from berth holders at Northney. Having had my name on the wait list for some time a berth has become available (friends moor in Emsworth - hence this was my preference). My only concern is that I draw 2.3 m - I have been told that I will only be restricted 30mins either side of a Low Spring - is this correct ?

Thanks in advance

I'd be very surprised. Last time I was down there it was full of shoal draft types and Cats. I'll check my chart next time I'm down on my boat but the harbour creeks don't half dry out.

Oops thinking of Thorney Island, sorry. Northerney seems to be the home for some deep draft vessels and the main channel is deep enough.

I think you were thinking of Thornham marina ... Thorney Island doesn't have a marina ... just lots of boys with guns ... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I knew it was Thorn something.. and on the island. I keep out of Chi Harbour myself......mostly anyway.....too much mud and not enough water.

Close - it is actually north of the island ... just ...

Quite happy for you to stay out the harbour ... more room for the rest of us .. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Anyway - your missing out on the sand ...

But when I'm on my boat I like water all round me and deep under me.....sand's only goood for making concrete. Fin keeler's DON'T do it in shoal waters.

Itchenor is ok at LW ... the others I wouldn't go too either... not at LW....cos they all dry ! Still plenty of harbour left though...

The shallowest part of Northney is in the approach, just as you round the last ("Northney") pile beacon fl 4 red ev 10 secs, charted as having a Tide Gauge but not any more. This has a least depth of about 0.5 metre And MLWS at Northney is 0.8m. Just do your sums while you're waiting to float off!
Seriously, it isn't a problem for you wouldn't be crossing Chi Bar around that time.
If in doubt, ring me - I've sailed fin keelers out of here for 30 years.

I draw 1.85m and have been at Northney for 4 years. Chugginaround is absolutely right about the shallow bits... I never found the depth a problem and only a couple of times got caught for a short while. However I left this year tio go to the Hamble for a change. You might have my berth :-) - A40!!!

It is a great marina and nice new facilities. Hope you enjoy your stay..

at the bottom of a real low spring ( a few days in Spring & Autumn).... you may find it's rather more than 30 mins. the water at Northney can/does get pulled out via Chichester and Langstone harbour entrances & low springs can be as much as 0.5m below CD, sometimes more if wind/pressure conspire together.

But really, this is just a few days each time - although I've seen 6 or more yachts aground outside before; it is fairly rare. We go in/out a lot & only once could I see the bottom of the channel really clearly ( a day for raising the o/b! )

But be sensible, learn the depth in your berth/start of Sweare Deep(hmmm) vs the shallowest parts of the approach & you'll be fine. Too many people press on regardless & have an unhappy hour or three leant over, when they should have stopped & put the kettle on.

More people go aground when it's not LW - the current across the entrance channel often leaves 'em on the mudbanks just to the W.

Come & say hello if you do take a berth - we're on B24. Also happy to show you the deepest water.

A freind has a yacht there, it draws 6'6" and he never has a problem. In practice you will be able to exit the marina, but there is a lump if you take it a bit wide after the last port marker. If you hug in tight, one seems to miss it.
I am wondering why you may wish to leave at low water, as to catch the west going tide (who wants to go east?) at the harbour entrance you want to be at the entrance beacon about an hr before high water. Its about an hr from the marina so your usual departure time would be about 2hrs before hw. If you have a fair wind you should catch the tide at Cowes, and before you know it you will be at the other end of the Solent.
The return trip works well too, just aim to get back at `chi for HW, and the tide brings you here. You can also follow every one else, which makes it easy to find the entrance!

With a little care, you will find you can sail around most of the harbour at LW, but somtimes your tacks may be quite short!
Hope this helps.
