Northern Spain / Portugal relocation couple of questions

I am beginning to ask myself the same question. Some of the slightly frosty responses I have received to posts elsewhere in these Forums/a lead me to suspect that on YBW at least I am not necessarily amongst friends or kindred spirits
No in general very helpful lot.Ijust ignore negative attitudes….we found a good gestoria to sort our tax every year.MaybeIt might be better not to rush too much how stuff works is different in Iberia,

Thankyou. Yasmine Marina in Hammamet have just offered me an 11 x 4 metre annual berth for €1880. I am tempted, especially as there is a ferry service to Marseille and Malta /Sicily are only just over the horizon.

Portugal is nice (but not €100k in VAT nice) and cheap (€2800 for an equivalent berth in VRSA, much more in e.g. Villamoura, Albafueira or Portimao). I can buy a whole lot of Schengen substitutes for €1,000 a year and €100k in the Bank) 😎

Sounds good, prices for berthing are not as cheap as they used to be at least in Galicia

Are you sure you would be liable to VAT? Unless you are a permanent resident of the EU and taxed in the EU and permanently importing your boat I don't think you are and even then there is the question of countries operating duel taxation, France does don't know about Portugal and Spain.

Are you taking that berth offer up? Sounds like an interesting place for a winter stay, tempted myself...

Portugal

Good morning, I am a new member of the Forum and this is my first post. I am considering relocating to Portugal under the D7 visa scheme, and have secured an annual berth in a marina; unfortunately the local council will not accept this as proof or accomodation, notwithstanding an explicit letter from the marina

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing?

Thankyou in anticipation

They accepted a 12 month marina contract as my proof of address in Leixoes (Porto area)...

hi again - one other option we'd welcome any advice on (and one I'd not considered before as we were thinking 'North'), but is moving to a UK registered/VAT boat in Gibraltar an 'easier' option for UK passport holders (but still working remote for a company in England )?

In this scenario we'd prefer to liveaboard, and sail out for 90 days to places in the Med/Atlantic

Are there any downsides/upsides to this approach - rather than trying to get Digital Nomad visas for Spain/Portugal ?

Northern Spain and N Portugal are beautiful but do experience a period there in Winter. We found it too wet and cold but lovely in the Summer. Likewise we found S Portugal to hot and crowded in the Summer plus more expensive.

Hence we chose the Silver Coast but everyone has different priorities/opinions - otherwise we would all live in the same place!!

As others have said and it also my understanding that in some places you can apply for residency with a Marina Berth and others won't accept that. It would be simpler and more certain to take out a cheap rental agreement for a few months and apply for a residency from there.

We lived on board in Nazare Marina for some 18months after we sold the apartment and was waiting for our house to be built. I pay €1650 for a 1 year berthing contract for a 43' boat in Nazare.

If you obtain residency there is a period where you can transfer your assets (providing you have owned them for I think 1year prior to moving) without taxes imposed eg Car matriculation to a Portuguese number plate, not sure if it applies to boat (not re-registering it but just bringing it with your own possessions) Obviously specialist advice is great but would be even better if it was consistent - which is difficult when different places choose to interpret the rules differently.

Whatever you decide good luck.

thanks ever so much Sailfree - that's very helpful to know (and wow at the €1650 annual berth for your 43' boat!) (y)

Negotiations have been underway for some time about Gib joining Schengen territory so it's bolt-hole status may well be ending.

thanks for the heads up Graham - I'd not known about that (just been reading the below)

Gibraltar Could Join Schengen Zone by the End of This Year - SchengenVisaInfo.com

sorry to ask further (as VAT and visa rules and such like for UK passport holders I'm still trying to wrap my head around)

if I managed to relocate to Gibraltar, would I then be able to travel in EU for longer than 90 days if/when this change happens ?

also - do I need to get a residency card/visa for Gibraltar as a UK Passport holder - or is it ok to move to there (currently as things stand) ?

The VAT situation is fairly simple. As a UK resident, you can bring a UK boat to the EU for 18 months and then leave for a short period (even a day) and then return for another 18 months. If you take up residence in an EU country then you may be able to bring the boat VAT free as @Sailfree mentioned, otherwise VAT will be due on current value.

With residence in an EU country, you can spend as much time there as you want but still limited to 90/180 in the rest of Europe, unless married to or in legal partnership with an EU citizen, when travel in their company is unlimited. I have no idea what the situation will be for Gib residents if they do become part of Schengen or, whether Gib is open for new residents.

You can also travel with your child, if they have an EU passport.

You may find it difficult to find a berth in Gib. I believe there are long waiting lists!
