Apologies if I am going over old ground but I am a new user.
We have over-wintered our Westerly Merlin in the Villaine, but plan to head north this year and leave the boat in North Brittany for next winter, ie L'aberwrach to St Malo.
Has anybody info on suitable marinas/ports, I know space is at a premium in most locations. I am looking for somewhere that I can leave the boat securely ashore.

L'Aberwrach might be disappointing, Perros a bit better.

Lezardrieux has a good little yard, and Paimpol has a wide range of first class facilities, and a fishing fleet who dont like paying yachtsmans prices.

St Malo has lots of facilities, but they are dispersed around the port area.

I'd go for Paimpol or Lezardrieux - Paimpol being marginally easier to access from St Malo by road.

Paimpol

Paimpol marina is completely sheltered but suffers from neaping when the gates don't open for a couple of days. Trebeurden Marina is very sheltered and there is usually space even in the high season.

I did leave a boat in St Malo once for a month but up the river at Dinan is very sheltered if you have the time to lock through to get there.

Otherwise the marinas at Lezardrieux and Treguier offer shelter but both are situated in a fast moving river on the ebb. You could always go up the Trieux to Pontrieux which is again behind a lock (see last month's YM)

As to storage ashore, apart from Bas Sablons at St Malo and the first marina up the Rance I don't think there are many facilities for easy launch and recovery of a sizeable yacht.

I agree with Pampoil. Look to your air height if going up to Dinan, there is a electric cable above the lock and a 19M bridge before the lock.
Same for Pontrieux, bridge is 17m and cables further up, ( typical of YM not to put the safe height for these in their article).
I am surprised no one has mentioned Morlaix, this is very sheltered and has an area for storage ashore as well just in front of the old tobacco factory (or it used to)

Yes Morlaix - only place in cruising france for 30 years that we were asked for ships papers.

You know, I forgot about the bridges and the cables too. none were a problem with our 30ft Hunter but if ever we come back to the Channel from the Med. I wouldn't try to take the current boat up either waterway.

Another thought: St Quay Portrieux (sp?) - very deep marina and if you can dry out a hard level bottom in the old harbour.

Yep
Been 'done' for Fiche in several places North and South Britanny, and paid the fine the one time I forgot to put the papers on board and had to divert to Cherbourg to put off seasick crew instead of carrying onto CI
Current AD is some 20M so have not had the balls to go under the cables either.
SQP marina is fine but pricy - would they want to float on each tide in the drying hbr?
Also other hidyholes are Binic etc

There is space - but how much is taken by the locals in the winter I couldnt say. The area itself is quite large to start with, mind you.
