I need to fit two new instruments to the wooden panel above the hatch garage. There is a sort of seal/gasket between the panel and the grp surface it screws into who you assume is original therefore over 30 years old. What sealant could I use on top of the existing to ensure a watertight seal? Sikafllex is an adhesive as well as sealant - I need something that won’t weld the two together permanently

Door draught rubber seals .... I use this for sealing my cockpit sole etc. It is selfadhesive one side and soft D rubber other ... it squishes down thin when compressed.

Another old trick as a temp way is to use a typical silicon or similar sealant ... apply evenly round the opening - then apply a smear of oil on the unit to be fitted .... place and press so that sealant creates full seal ... leave for a short period but not so its fully set ... carefully remove item and let sealant set. You now have a non-sticky seal ..

Buy a roll of butyl tape and it will last you years as you will find other uses for it,not sure whether the stuff in the tube dries out as never used it,but every other sealant seems to.

Thanks to a recommendation here I used Scapa 3507 bedding tape for a window to GRP seal, and think it might well be suitable for your need.
