Gave up attempting to get to Brest 2004 due to rotten weather and with nothing else constructive to do have cancelled holiday and come home.

Waited for a weather window and found a NW 4/5 occ 6 but one hour into channel and rolling beam end to beam end we asked ourselves if we really wanted to do this for the next 12 hours, and with the Coastguard vhf forecast for our next tidal gate announced as being F6 we decided to head back to Yarmouth.

My two firm events of summer, the Fowey lifeboat rally (cancelled), and Brest 2004 (failed to show) have left me wondering what to do with the rest of this 'orrible summer.

Anyone know of any trad boat do's?

Bummer when one optimistically sets off for a couple of weeks with a basic plan, and it goes pear shaped. I had a west country trip wrecked like that, so went into Poole and up to Wareham and visited places I had not been into before, ate in restaurants I'd not eaten in before, and shared a drink with people I had never previously met. So, go somewhere 'new to you'. It should at least give you a laugh or two to look back on.
Then you could do something different on the water like er, well MBY mentioned a steamy boat do up the River Medina, not till Sept but got to be worth a visit if you appreciate some of our historical vessels.
We have got powerboat racing based at Cowes Wed 25th Fri 27th Sat 28th and Sunday 29th Aug. Noisy, fast and furious, not everybodies bag but will be there anyway.

Whatever you do, remember some of us are still working, that should make you smile. Enjoy.

I'm home now for at least two weeks. I think I would have done as you suggest had the weather been in any way pleasant, dull grey interpersed with rain showers. At least it meant leaving the boat was no great disappointment to me.

I think my kind of boating requires a target, I have a non-boaty wife so it's a preferred option to go to events where there's a lot going on, and where there is some kind of traditional boat or RNLI interest surrounding it. Ordinary cruising, although something I would like to do, is unlikely to be something I will ever do.

John, sell that bloody old tub, buy yourself a spearfish again, and join the fairey mob.

With a 30 knot boat you can go much further in two weeks A) becuase of speed and B) you can make better use of smaller weather windows.

I've not seen fotos of her, where is she now?

Swinging at Hamworthy, and don't be rude please. I loved my Spearfish, but it was a boat for someone living close to the water, a fast weekender or day out launch, not a comfortable boat for more than a day or two.

If I could afford three boats, a Spearfish or an Omega would be one of them.

On the other hand, when I owned my Herd and Mackenzie we didn't bother with the forecasts anyway. It's all a matter of size, or perhaps wallets.

Yes John, you were pretty unlucky with the weather. Funny, but most of June was pretty reasonable, this month has been most unreasonable!

A friend booked a med holiday well in advance and came back cursing a few weeks back, just when WE had a good week!. Nowt is guaranteed with weather, except its unpredictability!
