Carried out a routine inspection of the engine bay yesterday only to be hit by one godawfull pong. Soon traced the offending odour to a holding tank vent pipe dripping number 1s cos I let it get too full. Thankfully number 2s are not allowed onboard on pain of death (or at least doing the washing up for a week) I have swilled the area with a soapy solution and emptied via bilge pump but what is the best way of freshening up my bilge further.
Regards - Ian

Petshops sell a liquid called "Simple Solution" which will neutralise any odours and stains caused by organic liquids, it's sold for clearing up after animals. Also good for spilt milk, red wine etc.

The microbial pet odor eliminator is the answer. Clean using detergent and water only--no bleach or other chemical "deordorizers"...mop up all the water, then spray every surface with the microbial product. Do not rinse...just let it dry, leaving hatches open so that plenty of fresh air can circulate for 24 hours. If you still have odor, you missed a spot.

I dunno why people avoid putting solid waste into a tank...it doesn't stink or cause any more problems than urine.

Mine smelt lovely! we wash them out with fresh water then wax polish them! the worst smell was the squashed fruite juice that went moldy...we occasionally eat our dinner under the engine...
