NMEA & WiFi

Oh of course one consideration if I went down the Axiom route, I wouldn't be able to buy cheap charts from Navionics, would I? That could be a sufficient extra cost. I've got a pretty large cruising area to cover.

Navionics charts are available for Axiom via a download to the SD card. However, they are expensive compared to Navionics Boating, around £150 to £200 per region, annual subscription. If being budget conscious, stick to Boating subscription on a plotter.

As far as I am aware you don't need a subscription for the plotter cards. I buy once, then update the next year a few days before the annual updates expires. Use for year 2. Buy update at start of year 3 - using RYA discount cost me £105 and will do me another couple of years. So not materially more than Boating on tablet.

Yes. My mistake. However see dunedin's post No 28, apparently not that expensive.

There are sellers of 'expired' SD cards on eBay .... averaging about 50 quid ... you cannot subscribe with them - but if you look through the listings - you can get recent expired ...

Example : I bought a 2023 December updated expired card in spring 2024 for about 50 quid ... all Baltic. I can now if I wanted buy a late 2024 card for similar price ...

It's a bit more money, but i'd prefer an Actisense one. W2K-1

It would be a shame to not have AIS on the tablet though, as Refueler said.

Also, you won't be able to control the autopilot.
I just bought one of these, waiting for it to arrive. Going to set it to client mode so devices (primarily android tablet running Navionics to show AIS).

It's a shame Navionics can't parse any more of the NMEA info like depth and wind. Any recommendations for apps to view the NMEA stuff in gauge format?

Open cpn has a dashboard that allows you to customise your NMEA data to suit your personal requirements. Ais display is way better than most of the commercial offerings. Don't go for the useless unsupported free option on play store.

Playstore also has NMEA dashboard which can be used as an alternative screen for displaying all nmea information on your tablet as a portable instrument cluster repeater.

And if running on a raspberry pi with a MacArthur HAT, will take 0183, 2000, and signal k. DAISY HAT will add AIS cheaply.
